WILKINS SURNAME DISTRIBUTION IN THE U.S. (Provided by Hamrick Software)

wilkinssurname.gif - 3.5 K

The color of each state indicates how frequently you will find someone with this surname in each state. For instance, if a state is colored red, then 1 in 100 people (or more) in that state have the surname. Similarly, yellow means approximately 1 in 300 have the surname, green means 1 in 1000, and blue means 1 in 10,000 (or less).

The following notes were located in the Centerville, Hickman County, Tenn. Library and were found in a document titled History of The Only, Tenn. Wilkins The name of the authors were William Almond Knight and his brother Harold Thomas Knight. The first couple of paragraphs of this writing state that "John Wilkins (1596-1649) came to the Colony of Jamestown in 1623 from Wales. This was just 11 years after the English had established there in what is now Virginia. His son was Benjamin Wilkins (1648-1747). His son was Joseph Wilkins (1704-1780). His son was Clement Wilkins. The Wilkins family that settled in what is now Hickman County, Tennessee, have been traced back to Clement Wilkins who was born in the Colony of Georgia. It was here that he married Clarissa Dicker. The Virginia State Library has a record that Clement Wilkins repaired arms during the Revolutionary War."

From "History of Hickman County, Tenn.", page 252, it states: "Richard Wilkins, (b. 1771 (my records indicate probably b. abt. 1780); d.1863), was the father of Thomas, Clement, John, and James Wilkins, located within one hundred yards of Mount Zion Spring in 1808. He was known as "Little Dickey" Wilkins. He maried Susan Epperson, a sister of Amsel Epperson. His son, John Wilkins, married a daughter of Carey Epperson and moved to Texas. There he was slain by a negro whom he was attemping to handcuff, the negro striking him with a hammer. The daughters of Richard Wilkins were Nancy, Susan, Melinda and Lucinda. The last two were twins and married brothers, William and Richard Brown. He was a son of Clement Wilkins, who emigrated from Virginia to Georgia, and from Georgia to Yellow Creek in Dickson County, in 1798. Clement Wilkins married Clarissa Dicker of Virginia."

It is quite possible that Clement had sons named Clement Jr. (1795-1845/50), and Thomas Wilkins (1795-1885), who married Nancy Cude.
I believe that my ancestor Sarah Wilkins (b. abt. 1788 in GA) to be the daughter of Clement and Clarissa Dicker Wilkins... Although I have conflicting information (at this time) on who Sarah Wilkins parents really were: one source lists John Wilkins and Mary Anthony Wilkins of Dutch descent as her parents, and another source lists her parents as Clement Wilkins and Clarissa Dicker (who also settled Hickman Co., TN during the same period).

My ancestor Sarah Wilkins married Jesse Blackwell in Franklin Co., GA on April 26, 1810, then settled Hickman Co., TN about the same time as Clement Wilkins and other Blackwell families.

There was a Clement Wilkins as Head of Family in Mecklenburg Co., Virginia in 1782 with 5 white souls residing there. (Mecklenburg Co. Va. is on the middle-southern edge of Va. - bordering N.C. to the south and its parent-county of Lunenburg Co. to the north).

From fellow researcher: Arlina C. Moss, the following was submitted:
There was "A" Clement Wilkins in Mecklenburg Co. VA in 1782. There was one doing land deals in Granville Co. NC in 1820-22. Arlina stated that she assumed they were the same ones, but still wondered how either of these fit with John and wife Mary. (see below).

John Wilkins married 1st to Mary Unknown (d. by 1751), married 2nd to Hannah Unknown. This may be the John Wilkins who patented land in King William Co. in 1722. Was in Spotsylvania Co. in 1720's where he registered his livestock. Was in Hanover Co. in 1734 when he bought 1000 acres in Brunswick Co. While in Brunswick Co. he and Mary sold 200 ac. In Lunenburg Co. he and Mary sold 400 ac. in 1746. That year, he was appointed security for guardianship of Hannah Clements, orphan of John Clements. In a 1751 deed, his wife was Hannah. Last record of John is in 1757.

Children of John Wilkins and wife Mary:

1. Thomas Wilkins mar. Hannah (Clements?), he died by 1784 in Lunenburg or Mecklenburg. Had at least one son John who married Anne Unknown. Thomas received land from his father in 1749, where he was already living. Bought land from Francis Bressie that his son John and wife Anna, of Mecklenburg Co. sold in 1774.
2. William Wilkins, mar. Sarah Avoreth? (dau. of Thos. & Sarah) ca. 1750. Wm. received 100 ac. from his father in 1749. Wm. made his mark "W" in early deeds. He had at least one son James, married to a Newton by 1785 - wife's name was Lettice (1796). Wm. and Sarah may have possibly been the parents of Thomas who mar. Susannah Pace (Cleveland Co NC); and John who mar. Mildred Parrish (Halifax Co. VA).
3. James Wilkins, d. 1781, Mecklenburg Co., VA, mar. Arabella Smith, widow of Daniel Marrow. He received 100 ac. from his father in 1751. Children: Charles Wilkins (went to N.C. and mar. 1st Frances Jones, mar. 2nd to Elizabeth Puryear; Martha Wilkins; Sukey Vaughan Wilkins; Mary Wilkins; Milly Newton Wilkins.
4. Richard Wilkins mar. Tebecca Twitty. He died abt. 1796 in Granville Co. N.C. Received a horse from his father in 1751. Was in Mecklenburg Co. until 1780's when he moved to Granville Co. NC where he died. Possible children were: Rebecca, William, Allin, Sophia, Polly, Thomas (who was in the same dist. in N.C. w/Richard?)
5. Susannah Wilkins - no further info.
6. Mary Ann Wilkins married Bartholomew Stovall and moved to N.C.

(Still not identified: Clement Wilkins of Mecklenburg Co. who may have later been in N.C.;
Valentine Mullins to whom John deeded 250 acres;
Lunenburg Court Order Books indicate there may have been a John, Jr.;
Mary Wilkins in Mecklenburg Co.
Clement Wilkins in Mecklenburg Co.
Sarah Wilkins.

From Census Records and Land Records:

Clement Wilkins was a known resident Wilkes Co., GA by July 24, 1790, where he is noted on a deed that he was a resident of Wilkes Co., Ga. and purchased 287 1/2 acres in Franklin Co., Ga. on a branch of Gorhams Creeks, waters on N. Fork of the Broad River.
In Aug. 1792 Clement Wilkins was noted as being a resident of Franklin Co., GA when he purchased 500 acres of land on Little Creek. He sold this property just two years later in Aug. 1794, and a few months later he purchased 188 acres in Franklin Co., Ga. on the waters of Hudson River.

By 1815 Clement became a resident of Hickman County, Tenn. and had sold his Franklin Co., Ga. properties as noted in deed dated 30 Jan. 1815. This family settled in Hickman County in the town of Only, Tenn., which was at one time known as the Wilkins Settlement, the Big Spring, Mt. Zion and Dreamer. The Wilkins were some of the first settlers in Hickman Co., Tenn.
