 | Known as the Proctor Block, this
commercial building at 40-44 South Street was built in 1890 and was the
ticket office for the trolly rides starting in 1902. In this photo,
taken about 1895, one can see that the door on the left leads to the
Public Library which rented the second floor for $100 per year.
One of the best known proprietors of the news store on the right was
George Francis and later, about 1940, was called Davis' Store when "Doc"
Davis bought the business. The store on the left, a grocery store,
was operated by Curtis Stone and his son, David, who was Town Clerk.
When Casper Blaisdell took over the business in 1921, he also became
Town Clerk. The railroad station can be seen in the lower right corner. |
