India's Human Development

Before India can become a true world power it must be able to remedy the poverty at home.  In the UN’s Human Development index, which is a composite of various factors including health, education, and income, India ranks 127th among 175 countries.  India’s under-five mortality rate per 1,000 live births is 93.  This means that one in eleven children dies before the age of five.  Its maternal mortality ratio per 100,000 live births is 540, compared to 56 for China and 380 for Bangladesh.

It has been shown that poverty in India is declining, and much industry has developed however, these reports that come out also show poverty is declining have done so by redefining poverty. Now, the terms longer relates to whether or not people get their minimum requirements of calories, the official National Sample Survey of 2000 showed that three-fourths of India’s rural population and half the urban populations did not get the minimum recommended calories.  According to nutritional and health surveys, more than two fifths of the adult population suffer from chronic energy deficiency, and a large percentage are at the border of this condition.  It also says that half India’s women are anemic, and half its children can be clinically defined as malnourished.
