"From the desert I come to thee on a Stallion shod with fire,
and the winds are left behind in the speed of my desire"
~ Bayard Taylor, "Bedouin Song" ~

Away, away, my steed and I,
Upon the pinions of the wind,
We sped like meteors through the sky,
When with it's crackily sound the night
Is chequer'd with the northern light.

~Lord Byron~

The hooves of a horse! Oh!
Witching and sweet is the music earth steals from the iron-shod feet;
no whisper of love, no trilling of bird, can stir me as hooves of the horse have stirred.

    - Will H. Ogilvie -

He Didn't Want Him Any Smaller

Beside the open door he stood,
Shyly and somewhat aloof,
While the burly blacksmith pared
The sturdy pony's hoof.

His misgivings at last found voice,
And his form grew two inches taller.
"Please stop that, Mr. Smith," he cried,
"I don't want him any smaller."

-Frank H. Stauffer-

The want of a nail loseth the shoe,
The loss of a shoe troubles the horse,
The horse endangereth the rider,
The rider breaking his ranks
Molests the company so far
As to hazard the whole army.

Polo Ponies

Has Pegasus, then visited the earth,
Borne on great pinions lyrical with thunder,
And these his foals, - This breed of racing wonder,
Fearless and free, and sensible of worth?
With flash of eye and silver gleam of girth,
They charge, now neck to neck, now wheeled asunder,
With shining sides, small feet that scorn to blunder,
Dark nostrils trembleing in their pride of birth.
Sired from the skies, they eddy down the plain,
Chestnut and black and the fast -flying dun,
And swift and strong the crowd, and tense and fain,
Eager as fire though the last goal is won,
These wilding creatures gentled to the rein,
These little brothers of the wind and sun!

~ Eleanor Baldwin ~

A Winter Ride

Who shall declare the joy of the running!
Who shall tell of the pleasures of flight!

Springing and spurning the tufts of wild heather,
Sweeping, wide-winged, through the blue dome of light.

Everything mortal has moments immortal,
Swift and God-difted, immeasurably bright.

So with the stretch of the white road before me
Shining snow crystals rainbowed by the sun,

Fields that are white, stained with long, cool blue shadows,
Strong with the strength of my horse as we run.

Joy in the touch of the wind and sunlight!
Joy! With the vigorous earth I am one.

"Tread not where the path might lead you,
go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."

~Unknown~

Like human beings, horses are all individuals
with singular personalities,
their own virtues and their own faults.
We become bound to them for their beauty,
their eccentricities, their heart
and the love they so often return to us.

  ~ Lana Slaton ~

My horse has a hoof of striped agate;
His fetlock is like fine eagle plume.
His legs are like quick lightening.
My horse has a tail like a trailing black cloud.
His mane is made of short rainbows.
My horse's eyes are made of big stars.

THE RUNAWAY

Once when the snow of the year was beginning to fall,
We stopped by a mountain pasture to say 'Whose colt?'
A little Morgan had one forefoot on the wall,
The other curled at his breast. He dipped his head
And snorted at us. And then he had to bolt.
We heard the miniature thunder where he fled,
And we saw him, or thought we saw him, dim and grey,
Like a shadow against the curtain of falling flakes.
'I think the little fellow's afraid of the snow.
He isn't winter-broken. It isn't play
With the little fellow at all. He's running away.
I doubt if even his mother could tell him, "Sakes,
It's only weather". He'd think she didn't know!
Where is his mother? He can't be out alone.'
And now he comes again with a clatter of stone
And mounts the wall again with whited eyes
And all his tail that isn't hair up straight.
He shudders his coat as if to throw off flies.
'Whoever it is that leaves him out so late,
When other creatures have gone to stall and bin,
Ought to be told to come and take him in.'
~ Robert Frost ~
