In the rush to grab my camera and get the telephoto lens on it, I didn't think about the lighting conditions from this angle. Sigh. Trust me -- the bird is blue; I think about 2.5 feet tall. (Click and look in the center)

I managed to creep up to within about 20 to 30 feet of the Heron before it decided I was too close and took wing. It was really majestic -- I hadn't realized that a bird that large would be so graceful. Highway 1 is maybe 30-60 feet seaward of the bird, below grade.
