In Loving Memory of Matthew Fisher

Some of the linked pages take a few minutes to download, so be patient.

Written by Matthew’s Father.

Courageous, honest, intelligent, caring, perceptive, loving.  Words cannot begin to describe the way Matthew lived his life, or how much he influenced everyone he came in contact with.  Matthew lived with an attitude of always looking forward, never complaining and assuring everyone around him that he was “just fine”.  Matthew loved school and his teachers; he loved to participate in everything he could.  His desire to learn was never ending. Matthew talked of becoming a veterinarian because of his love of all life. 10 years is a very short time to be on this earth, yet Matthew carried himself with great wisdom.

A few of my fondest memories are: hitting his first home run, watching him climb trees, putting oil in my truck, snowboarding, never missing one spelling word, teaching me how to play on the computer, telling me I hug and kiss him too much, watching him swim, beating me in chess every time, showing me how strong he was.

Asking your son to go through all the things that Matt went through is an impossible situation for a parent.  Matt always accepted the situation and assured everyone that he was OK.  He loved his family deeply and was always taking care of us through his incredible courage. I cannot describe the pain and loss we all feel because he is not with us in body, yet the words that Matthew said to me perhaps 10,000 times still ring in my ears, “I’m fine dad, I’m fine”.

The Meaning of Courage

The American Heritage dictionary describes courage as "the quality of mind that enables one to face danger with self-possession, confidence, and resolution; bravery."  There are many ways people show courage.  I have met and known several people who have lived a courageous life.  The best example I can think of is Matt Fisher.  Matt was a member of our school.  He battled with cancer for many years before passing away this school year (Nov. 2 2001).  I think he had a lot of courage because he often came to school, even when he was in pain.  He was always friendly and smiled at everyone.  I think we should always remember him and think of him as one of the bravest students our school has ever known.  I miss Matt and know that he is in a better place.  I will always think of him as brave and as a great person.  Knowing Matt has taught me to appreciate my life and understand that it is a gift to be able to live without illness.
