Descendants of William Hess

First Generation

1.  William Hess was born about 1745.  He died in 1817 in Belfast Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.  He signed a will in 1817 in Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.[1]  The disposition of William's will provided additional genealogical material.

He was married to Margaret Hart in 1764 in Pennsylvania.  Margaret Hart was born about 1734.  She died on 21 November 1798 in Belfast Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.  She was buried on 23 November 1798 in Tonoloway Baptist Church Cemetery in Thompson Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.[2]

For more on this family see Chapter One William Hess of Bethel Twp.

The known children of William Hess and Margaret Hart were as follows:

Second Generation

2.  John S. Hess (William‑1) was born on 31 December 1765 in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania.   In 1798, John and his family resided in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania, in a house sized 22' X 18', valued at $20.00; 100 acres of land valued at $150.00.[3]   He joined the Tonoloway Baptist Church in August 1805 in Thompson Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.[4]  In 1808, John was taxed on three horses, two cattle; valued at $57.00; Taxed $0.21.[5]   He appeared on a List of Taxable Inhabitants in 1817 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania, with a Tax Valuation of $73.00.[6]

He was married to Sarah Truax (daughter of Ensign Stillwell Truax and Mary Smart) about 1793 in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania.  Sarah Truax was born on 18 May 1776 in Ayr Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.  Sarah was identified in her father=s will as wife of John Hess and an heir.[7] She joined the Tonoloway Baptist Church in May 1818 in Thompson Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.[8]  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Thompson Twp., Fulton Co., Pennsylvania.[9]  The 1850 U.S. Census for Fulton Co., Pennsylvania shows that Sarah, age 72 years, was residing with her son Stillwell Hess and family.  Sarah did not appear in the 1860 census therefore she died sometime between the census.

The known children of John S. Hess and Sarah Truax were as follows

10.       a.   Stillwell Hess (born on 6 October 1793).

11.       b.   William Hess was born on 10 July 1794 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.  He died in 1829 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.

12.       c.   Abner Hess was born on 20 February 1799 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.  He died on 9 November 1829 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.

3.  Catherine Hess (William‑1) was born about 1767 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.   She died before 1808.  Catherine was baptized as an adult in August of 1802 at the Tonoloway Baptist Church in Thompson Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.[10]

Catherine=s father, William=s will stipulates that fifty dollars was to be given to her children. The distribution from William's will, includes six dollars and twenty‑five cent paid to George Bishop, _____ Peck, _____ Peck; George Peck; Mary Peck; Elizabeth Peck; Peter Peck and Conrad Peck.[11]  Therefore, it is concluded that these are the grandchildren of William Hess. George Bishop's wife is Elizabeth Peck as reported in the History of Tonoloway Baptist Church. Also, some of these children were reported in History of Tonoloway Baptist Church as being the children of Conrad Peck and Catherine Brewer.  If Conrad Peck was married to Catherine the mother of Elizabeth Peck. Then, William Hess's daughter was Catherine Hess and not the daughter of Henry Brewer as was reported in Harry S. Holman's book "The History of Tonoloway Baptist Church."

She was married to Conrad Peck II about 1787 in Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.  Conrad Peck II was born on 2 January 1767 in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania.   He died on 15 February 1829 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.   He had an estate probated after 15 February 1829 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) PA.[12], [13]  Conrad was baptized as an adult in October of 1802 at the Tonoloway Baptist Church in Thompson Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.[14]  After the death of Catherine, Conrad then married Deborah Bailey, the daughter of Jonathan and Eleanor (Van Cleve) Bailey.  We will not chart the eight children born of the second marriage because they are not descendant of William and Margaret (Hart) Hess.  From various papers found at the Bedford County Court House it appears that at the time of Conrad's death, Henry the eldest son wanted the estate divided among all of the living children of his father. Apparently, Deborah, Conrad's widow was opposed to this for it would have left her virtually nothing. This disagreement was so strong that it apparently divided the first set of children from that of the second.

The known children of Catherine Hess and Conrad Peck II were as follows:

13.       a.   Henry Peck was born in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) PA.

She was married to John Hart, the son of William Hart, on 3 November 1794 in Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.  John Hart was born in February 1763 in Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.  He died in August 1822 in Belfast Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania. After the death of Elizabeth he then married Sebela or ASibby@.[17]  We will not chart the three children (John, Jeremiah and Catherine) born of the second marriage because they are not the descendants of William Hess and Margaret Hart.

The known children of Elizabeth Hess and John Hart were as follows:

21.       a.   William Hart Esq. (born on 18 December 1794).

This house size was 22' X 18' on (40 prch.) valued at $80.00.[18]   In 1808, Jacob was taxed on 111 1/2 acres Patent; 2 horses, 2 cattle; valued at $376.50; Tax $1.50; also had 48 acres Warrant; valued at $72.00; Tax $0.29.[19]  He appeared on a List of Taxable Inhabitants in 1817 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania with a Tax Valuation of $505.50.[20]   He signed a will in 1840 in Blackford Co., Indiana.[21]  He died in November 1849 in Licking Twp., Blackford Co., Indiana.

He joined the Tonoloway Baptist Church in October 1802 in Thompson Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.[22]  Religion was important in the lives of the early residents. William's children were all members of the Tonoloway Baptist Church. The Tonoloway Baptist Church took its name from the Konolowa River (now Tonoloway Creek), and during the first year of its existence was known as "Konolowa Church." The first Church building measured 18' X 22' in size and was constructed of logs.[23]  This was the old church, which stood in the cemetery, near the graves of Obediah and Susan Graves.

To day there is a dedication plaque on the church building that reads as follows:

"Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church was the tenth Baptist Church in the Province among British Baptists. The first church was built in 1752 on land that was later patented by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania unto John Stillwell, John Van Buskirk, Nathaniel Hart, Bethuel Covalt, Jacob Mann, Jacob Hart and Jacob Hess, Trustees, for the Sole use and Benefit of the Baptists."

The Church was organized in 1754, by Elder Samuel Heaton. The present Church, built in 1802, is the third one and was used as a hospital by the Union Army during the Civil War.

Jacob and his wife joined the Tonoloway Baptist Church in October 1802. Jacob served as a Trustee of the Church until August of 1842 at that time he and his family were in the process of moving West with two sons‑in‑law Jacob Covalt and Jacob Hart and their families. We see by the Tonoloway Church Records that recent members (Jacob Hess) wrote requesting information on how to organize a church in Indiana.  In Blackford County, Indiana, the early leading members of the Old School or Predestination Baptist Church were Jacob Stahl and wife, Mrs. Abraham Stahl, Asher Van Cleve and wife, Adam Hart, Jacob Hart, Aaron McVicker, Jacob Covalt, Abraham Hess, Abner Hess, Jacob Hess, Stillwell Truax and their wives and the brother and sister of Mrs. Truax named Karney.[24]

Jacob's daughter, Frances "Fanny" Hess and her husband, Jacob Covalt settled southwest of Hartford City, Indiana. They had a large family of children. In February of 1843, Jacob Covalt dies.  One of their children, Philip M., was in the jewelry business in Hartford City, Indiana.  Ephraim, Abner and Nathaniel were farmers in Hartford, Indiana.  In August and September of 1859, the Covalt family had a terrible visitation of diphtheria.  Five of Fanny's children died, and another partially recovered and died with consumption three years later.  Two of Abner Covalt's children also died.

Jacob Hess, Sr. was married to Ruhamah "Amy" Fisher (daughter of John Fisher and Frances "Frankey" Kuhl) about 1796 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.  Ruhamah "Amy" Fisher was born in 1775 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.  She joined the Tonoloway Baptist Church in October 1802 in Thompson Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.[25]  She died circa1815 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.  Ruhamah was buried at the Tonoloway Baptist Church Cemetery in Thompson Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton co.,) Pennsylvania.[26]

He was married to Eleanor (‑‑‑?‑‑‑),  about 1819 in Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.  Eleanor was born on 15 August 1785.  She died on 1 May 1851 in Montgomery Co., Ohio.  It is believed by some that Eleanor's maiden name was Stillwell however; we have no documentation to prove this claim one way or the other. They withdrew their membership from the Tonoloway Baptist Church and the family moves west settling in Randolph Twp., Montgomery County, Ohio.

Abraham and Eleanor Hess were baptized in October 1802 at the Tonoloway Baptist Church in Thompson Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania.[27]

From the 1850, U.S. Census we see the two youngest children Henry and Caroline are living at home. We also see from the 1850 census Eleanor's age is sixty‑six years. From the death records of Montgomery County, we see that she died 1 May 1851, giving her age more precisely as sixty‑nine years nine months and 27 days.[28]  By 1860, U.S. Census we find Abraham living with his youngest son Henry and his family. From the death records we see that Abraham died 24 May 1866 at the age of 86 years and eight days, which gives his date of birth more precisely as 17 May 1780.
