Of my friends in the above photos, four of us (Kevin Leung, Thomas, Joseph and I) study abroad. The picture on the left was taken about six or seven years ago, when we were all students at Diocesan Boys' School (D.B.S.). The one on the right, by contrast, was shot this past Christmas. Since we are studying in different universities nowadays it is harder to find us all gathered together. We first got to know each other in primary school, a.k.a. grade school. That's more than ten years ago! Most of us started in C.C.K.G. (Christ Church Kindergarten), got promoted to D.P.S. (Diocesan Preparatory School) and continued on to D.B.S. The three schools have an alliance, so boys who study in one usually continue their studies at the next. D.B.S. is what you would call middle and high school in the United States - spanning grades 7 to 13. 13? Yup, no typo there - the British system (Hong Kong was under Colonial rule until 1997) requires an additional year of high school, and balances things out by having only three years of college.

As you might imagine, knowing each other for so long can form some really close friendships. Unfortunately friends come and go in real life, though rarely does this happen on purpose - it is very hard to maintain old relationships when one has switched schools or is studying on the other side of the Pacific. In some ways it is unavoidable. But sometimes, an old acquaintance or two stays in touch, and over time those friendships can come to mean a lot. I'm very lucky, because a couple of people in these photos have proven to be true time-tested friends. We've known each other for twelve years and haven't gotten bored with each other; we're separated by thousands of miles yet that doesn't faze us. It's like old times when we meet each other again in Hong Kong. No problem cracking stupid jokes or plain acting silly - while we may have gotten older, our personalities haven't changed. They are what I would call the best of the best.

Those two people are Lau Chun Yu and Samuel Chan. Particularly Ah Lau - I can call him anytime and we can talk for over an hour about virtually anything. He's one of the people whom I look forward to the most when I return to Hong Kong during the holidays.
