Stream monitoring is a great activity for young and young at heart environmentalists and a good way for students to earn community service credits. Read about the two events we have coming up on this page:
Sept 29, 2007 BIBI Monitoring Report: We had a good turnout for the Fall 2006 Benthic Inventory of Biological Integrity (BIBI) monitoring event. Two teams collected a total of 12 samples on McAleer and Lyon creeks. We had an enthusiastic Brookside Sixth Grader getting community service credits, and City Councelman making public contact.

1. Chemical Monitoring Session: Saturday, January 20, 2008, 9AM
We maintain a twice yearly testing schedule for chemical monitoring: the third Saturday in January and the third Saturday in July. Please join us at the lower level of the Lake Forest Park Towne Center mall at 9:00. We are usually done by 11:00. All are welcome!
2. Next BIBI Monitoring Event: Between 9/15 and 10/15 2008 (Location to be announced)
We have a yearly schedule of counting macroinvertibrates between September 15 and October 15. We gather at a home in Lake Forest Park to review the Benthic monitoring "how to" video and then head out to two streams and do the macroinvertibrate collection. This involves wading in the streams, finding an appropriate spot, gathering cobbles from bottom of the stream, and collecting the macroinvertibrates (small bugs) from the cobbles. The samples are then sent to a experienced technician for identification and enumeration. To stay informed regarding time and date see the Contact link on this page.
About Us
The Lake Forest Park StreamKeepers is a group of volunteers who keep an eye on stream quality and help educate on proper care to ensure continuing health and improvement to the quality of the streams within the City and McAleer/Lyon creek watershed in Lake Forest Park, Washington. We conduct regular stream testing, including chemical, fecal coliform, and biological integrity (BIBI).
Join Us: If you would like to get involved beyond water testing, there are 5 or 6 of us, the "Steering Committee", who meet with some regularity to discuss StreamKeeper goals and plan activities. We could use your help. Email one of the contacts for more information.
