Whatley Family Tree
Welcome to our Whatley Family Tree! This site traces our Whatley family ancestors - their origins in England, their journey to America, their migration from Virginia to the Carolinas, and finally, their arrival in Alabama.
The name Whatley may be translated as "wheat lea", where "lea" is a field or meadow. The name was spelled "Wheatley", as well as many other variations before standardized spelling became established. The surname derives from the place where a man once lived or held land. Therefore, he was said to be "of Whatley" or "of Wheatley". One of the earliest records of this name is of a man named Lambert de Watileia, who is listed in the Geld Roll, taken in 1084.
The Whatley Crest is shown above, featuring a stag's head, with 3 sheaves of wheat.

The Whatleys are generally considered to originate in and around the town of Frome (rhymes with broom) in Somerset County, England. There are also parishes named Whatley in Bath and Wells. |

I have attempted to use primary sources where available for the information listed here. Some of the information, however, is secondary, often from other internet sites. I have listed some of these below. Their information, in turn, may or may not be based on primary sources (census records, court records, etc.). Refer to these sites for more information.
There is some disagreement over the Whatley ancestry prior to Samuel Whatley. Here is one suggested lineage:
Sir John Wheatley of Castle Bromwich, Leicestershire, m. Mary
parents of
Richard Wheatley, b. 1565, Frome, m. Mary
parents of
Thomas Wheatley, b. 1584, Frome, m. Elizabeth Farrar
parents of
Capt. John Wheatley, m. Elizabeth Lygon
parents of
Benjamin Wheatley, b. 1645, m. Frances Rolle
parents of
Samuel Whatley
We will begin tracing our Whatley ancestors with Samuel Whatley , who was one of the first Whatleys in the Americas. Note that I have hyperlinked our Whatley ancestors from one generation to the next.
