Sept/Oct 2005 -- Chickens and a Chickenhouse

On September 8 we got our first shipment of Buff Orpington peeps. We wanted a dual-purpose bird that would go well with our goal of a self-sustaining organic farm. We chose Buff Orpingtons because they are a loosely-feathered bird that winters well in our colder climate. They are good layers, and have a pleasant personality.
There is a history and description at:
http://www.easternplains.com/orpington%20history.htm

Our own birds looked like this when we got them.

Lucinda has set up a brooder for the little chicks, while Steve is refurbishing the old chickenhouse. He started by jacking it up till it was level all around, then putting supports under it,
and replacing the floor. He then started insulating and sheathing new walls and just installed the new windows, people door and chicken doors. When it's finished, the white siding and green tin roof will match the house and shed, and the barn when it's painted.
