Like all workers, Al has a well-defined structure. Al has two domains, and each
domain is itself built up from smaller units.
Al's two domains are color-coded in these pictures. The NAD-binding domain, which lets Al grab onto NAD, is shown in light green. Al's catalytic domain, which contains Al's active site, is shown in dark blue. The left picture shows Al's surface. NAD is tucked into Al's NAD-binding domain, and it and an alcohol rest against Al's catalytic domain. They touch at Al's active site. The right picture shows a smoothed trace of Al's backbone. The trace shows the coils and strands that make up smaller units of Al's structure. The middle picture shows the backbone trace inside a transparent shell of Al's surface, showing how the surface relates to Al's backbone. The space between Al's backbone and surface is filled by Al's side chains. |
