Here’s a picture of my studio. I use the term loosely as I don’t feel like I’m an artist as much as a craftsperson, so I guess I consider my space be more of a workshop than studio. But then again, when I think of workshop I think of drab basement or garage space, and I am lucky to have a small, but pleasant space with real paint and a nice window, so it does feel like a studio. So I guess studio it is. For years our home was small, with an overcrowded garage and no basement. I was stuck placing plywood across my washer and drier to create a workbench for my stained glass projects. I’m pretty sure it drove my husband nuts, since stained glass projects often take a while to complete. Many years and 2 kids later, we started feeling really cramped so we added a floor to our little house. Above the garage and adjacent to the master bedroom we built a storage room (our upstairs basement) in which to store the kids toys and assorted junk. At one end of the room I made space for a stained glass workbench. It is wonderful to have a little space all of my own! It may seem odd to have a studio off of the bedroom, but I think that has proved to be a blessing. I usually run my kiln at night, so if it malfunctions and sets off an alarm (which thankfully, hasn’t happened yet) at least it is close enough to wake me up. It also makes it easy to torch in my P.J.’s when I’m so inclined! |

I eventually plan to make changes. I’d love to have more of a real ventilation system, one that actually vents through the wall, rather than my pipes running to the perpetually open window. One of these days I’ll get brave and cut that hole in the wall!! I know I should hire someone to do that, but after living through a remodeling nightmare I have a bad case of contractor phobia.
Like any addicted glass work worker, I think about acquiring more equipment and supplies; more glass, a bigger kiln, a glass saw… the list goes on! So I am eyeing the other half of the room… I’d have a lot more space if I got rid of a few of those toys! .....Barbie beware! |
