THE DESCENDANTS OF JONATHAN (117)

As the young people of the Cape grew to maturity and wished to establish homes with property of their own, the acquisition of land grew in importance. It could be acquired by purchase from large landholders or bought from the Indians. One such transaction was the Quason Purchase in 1730, an area sold by the Indians through as intermediary agent. This was a large territory west of Pleasant Bay which was later to become part of East Harwich.

Jonathan Linnell (117,5) was one of that purchasing group. His father, before him, may have started the negotiations. Jonathan was one of those charged with the division of this land. He, himself, drew the 16th plot. The names of the purchasing party reads like a roll call of the families with whom Linnells intermarried- Hopkins, Doane, King, Snow, Mayo, Atkins, Freeman. Just how soon this purchase supported the residences of these persons is not known but it would indicate another close family neighborhood. (Map on p. 17)

During the period of the fourth and fifth generations of Linnells in this country, Eastham grew considerably; and a movement for the separation of the south parish from the balance of Eastham became a major issue. Not until 1797 was this finally achieved. The parish that had been substantially independent for about 75 years was then incorporated into the new town of Orleans. Heman Linnell (117,54) was one of the "selectmen" (councilman) at the time of incorporation and remained one of its leaders. Heman had been a selectman in Eastham for 12 years beginning in 1782. Jonathan, Jr. (117,62) was elected selectman in 1780.

At the time of the division and incorporation of Orleans, Benjamin, Isaac, Josiah, Elkanah, Edmund, and Thomas Linnell were seen as leaders who would be responsible in establishing the foundation of a town that would reach its later importance. They lived in the Tonset area of the town. Other Linnells later moved into the Barleyneck area of Orleans. These two neighborhoods of Linnells continued to be family enclaves well into the nineteenth century. Other Linnell families continued residence in the East Harwich area. Thomas Linnell, with a group of neighbors, petitioned to remain a part of Harwich when inhabitants of that area were considering incorporation into Brewster. The determination of town boundaries was important for the organization of schools, churches, commerce, and protection. In all of these developments our ancestors were involved.

Early industries sprang up to produce items needed to make life more convenient and esthetic. Linnells developed evaporation vats to produce salt from the salt marshes for their tables and for the curing of fish and meats. Linnells learned to tan leather and cobble shoes and create other leather products. Linnells were blacksmiths. They were carpenters and worked on the building of homes, churches, stores, and in the finishing crafts for the interior of those buildings. But most remained close to the land and self-sufficiency from the production of life's necessities, raising their own crops and meat.

The greatest departure from this economic dependence on farming and craft work is noted in those who found their livlihood in the sea. Certainly people who lived along the coasts had long depended on fish for part of their sustenance: but turning to the sea for their work began in earnest when land became scarce and inheritance necessitated smaller and smaller divisions among their large families. Census reports began to identify individuals' occupations in 1850. Together these census data reveal the stories of many Linnells whose work place was the oceans. Fully half of those Linnells listed on Cape Cod in 1850 were designated seamen, mariners, master mariners, or were named Captain. Some were in the oyster and fishing trade. Some were sailors on the ships that moved materials and people along the coast. Some were in the crews that plied the seas to foreign ports: London, Calcutta, Hong Kong.

(It is this Jonathan that we would like to believe to be the father of Jonathan, b.1723, d.1797. The question of the parentage of Jonathan (1723-1797) is discussed in Chapter V).

Elisha is not mentioned in Jonathan's will; and is believed to have died by this time. Sarah also is not mentioned but her children, Alice and Theophilus Mayo, are mentioned as grandchildren. Sarah had probably also died by 1777.

Through the marriage of Elisha to Martha Higgins all of their descendants can claim descent from Thomas Rogers of the Mayflower. Martha Higgins was the daughter of Mehitible (Phinney) and Samuel Higgins. Mehitible Phinney was the daughter of Ebenezer Phinney. Ebenezer Phinney was the son of Mary (Rogers) and John Phinney Jr. Mary Rogers was the daughter of Joseph Rogers who was the son of Thomas Rogers, the Pilgrim.

Elkanah enlisted as a private to serve in the Revolution in Feb. 1776 in Capt. Oliver Soper's Co., Col. Read's Reg't of the Mass. line. In November 1776 he was taken prisoner by the British and imprisoned in New York 7 weeks. According to family legend, at the end of the war Elkanah and a man named Snow walked home from Philadelphia, PA to Orleans, MA, a distance of over 200 miles.

Elkanah was on the pension list when it was established. He was later dropped because a property exclusion rule was thought to effect him. In 1823 he appealed to have the pension reestablished. At that time he affirmed that he was a laborer in poor health with a weak constitution and that he had been confined to his home for 4 years. His wife Sarah was 63 years old and also in poor health. Living in his household was his daughter Miriam, 30 years old, and her daughter. Miriam's husband was in State Prison for life. Abigail, Lydia, Olive, Joseph, and Dean Grey were also in his household and dependant on him. He had sold all of his real estate to John Doane to pay his debts, and needed the pension to exist. His pension was reestablished.

He indicated that his wife was subject to fits, that his daughter, age 17, and two sons, 11 and 10 years, were not able to support themselves. ix Orissa Sears b. 9 Jan. 1857

Captain Dean Gray Linnell was in charge of the volunteer Coast Guard on the 19th of January 1857 when the ship "Orissa" was wrecked on Nauset Beach. He and his crew were able to save all of the crew aboard and he took Captain Joshua Sears home with him that night. The Linnells were having trouble finding the right name for their ninth child born just ten days earlier. Captain Sears suggested that she be named for his ship and for him. This they did calling her Orissa Sears Linnell. Captain Sears, in gratitude for saving his life and that of his crew, always remembered Orissa with gifts through her lifetime. She went blind as the result of a severe illness while still a young woman, did not marry, and died at an early age.

In his later years Captain Dean Gray farmed near Orleans, MA.

Three other children had died soon after birth 1836, 1837, 1846.

Most famous perhaps, of all of the Linnell Captains, was Ebenezer Harding Linnell. By 1853 Eben had already distinguished himself in the cotton trade as Captain of the Cabinet and the Buena Vista. When the Eagle Wing was launched by James Curtis in his ship building yard at Medford, MA, Captain

Eben was promoted to the command of this sleek and beautiful ship. He took her out of Boston, MA on

The Eagle Wing

her maiden voyage on December 20, 1853 headed for San Francisco, CA and a voyage of two years that would test both his skill and the seaworthiness of his ship.

Just four days out of Boston he ran into a hurricane in the North Atlantic that even Captain Eben said was more severe than any typhoon or hurricane he had ever witnessed. Two men were washed overboard and only one could be saved. In spite of this beginning though, he reached San Francisco in 105 days, and from there headed for China in the Spring of 1854 and a consignment of tea for London. He left Foo Chow on 31 July 1854, survived a typhoon that nearly wrecked him again, and limped into the Thames in 113 days without a mizzen mast. His repair bill was high, 1470 pounds sterling, but so was his profit. His consignment of 1308 tons of tea could be sold at eight pounds sterling a ton.

Captain Eben's next two trips are those that cemented his reputation and that of his ship. He left London on 17 Apr. 1855 and arrived at Hong Kong 10 July after just 83 1/2 days, a record at which later clipper ships were to shoot in vain. His return trip was to New York and that was accomplished in 86 days, another remarkable record. On this trip he passed both the Joshua Bates and the Romance of the Seas.

He had been away from home two years and two months. In his well earned vacation of nine months he invented an improvement on the top sail rig that was to increase performance of the clippers and was used by sixty-four vessels, including a number of Shivrick-built ships, soon after it was patented.

Captain Eben Linnell, age 52

It was about 1860 that Captain Eben commissioned his father-in-law Edmund Crosby to build a French style villa on the site of the Cape Cod house that had been built for his bride Rebecca Crosby in 1835. The new home was to be a duplicate of a house he had seen in Marsailles in 1850 and was owned by his shipping agent. His home was a delight to him and continues to this day to delight those who visit its rooms and eat the gourmet cuisine of the Captain Linnell House Restaurant on Namskaket Rd. in Orleans, MA.

In 1856 the Chases invited Captain Eben to take command of their new clipper, the Flying Mist. His voyages on this ship took him first to San Francisco, then to Valparaiso, Chile, then to Caldera, also on the coast of Chile. On this last leg he rescued all on board a yacht that was in distress and won the great devotion of the gentlemen who were rescued. From Chile he returned to the Chesapeake Bay on 23 Aug. 1857, thence to Singapore and Hong Kong and back to New York by way of Manila in time for Christmas, 1858 in Orleans.

It was while in Hong Kong at Thanksgiving time, 25 November 1859, and waiting for a cargo, that Capt. Eben gave a much remembered ball on board ship. Invited were all in port from the Governor to the shipmasters with their wives, and the report was of a very splendid occasion.

On another tour he departed Hong Kong for SanFrancisco then picked up a load of guano from Baker's Island in the Pacific to be deposited in New York. For the next year he remained at home with his wife and three daughters in Orleans, MA.

On his next voyage on the Flying Mist he ran into unexpected difficulties. He had picked up the Flying Mist in London in February, 1862, took her to Glasgow and there loaded her with 1760 sheep and 18 shepherds to look after them, enroute for New Zealand. He made the trip in 81 days and picked up a pilot at Bluff Harbor. The ship dragged both anchors with which she was secured, rammed into a rock, and became a total loss. A subsequent investigation found no explanation for the disaster.

He returned to the command of the Eagle Wing in 1863 and on a trip to San Francisco in 1864 in a squall, he was caught in a bight of the spanaker-boom vang while the sail was jibing and was dashed against the spokes of the wheel. Critically injured, he lived only a few days. "For native ability, energy, and shrewdness, few American shipmasters were his equal" (Kettridge, Henry C., Shipmasters of Cape Cod, Houghton Mifflin Co. 1935, pp. 199-205).
