Evening of Recognition
June 19, 2008

The Literacy Program at the Plymouth Public Library held its annual Evening of Recognition on June 19, 2008 to show its appreciation to all those who participate in the program’s activities. Staff, program members, friends, and family gathered for a wonderful night at Plimoth Plantation.

Many family and friends were in the audience to celebrate the accomplishments of program members.

Monica Mullen from Senator Therese Murray’s office presented Janet Garfield a special citation for 13 years of continuous volunteering with the program.  Representatives Vinny deMacedo and Tom Calter congratulated the learners and gave an American flag to Scott Martin who recently joined the Army after getting his GED.

Dinah O’Brien, Director of Community Resources, expressed her pride in the accomplishments of the students, teachers, and tutors.  Gayle Petitpas, a GED graduate, told her fellow learners that they should follow their dreams.  The program is very proud of Gayle who, after much dedication and hard work, is on her path to become a nurse.

Another special part of the evening was the recognition of tutors in the program and their students who are learning the English language, improving their reading and writing, or working towards getting a GED.

The finale of the evening was the GED cap and gown graduation ceremony to recognize the students who had successfully passed the five challenging tests that comprise the GED exam.  This year the program had 40 graduates!  Their achievements serve as encouragement to all adults who desire to continue their education.
