Do you ever wonder what kind of community
service you can do that won’t take up too much
time and you can do with your kids? How about
something as simple as food shopping? The
Wellesley Pesticide Awareness Campaign (WPAC)
needs your help, and you can assist us by doing
your food and sundries shopping at Bread and
Circus Whole Foods Market this coming Wednesday,
April 4. On that day, Bread and Circus will donate
5 percent of their total sales to WPAC’s partner
organization, the Northeast Organic Farming
Association (NOFA). Part of these proceeds are
going to be used for joint WPAC/NOFA projects,
including a regional Organic Lawn and Garden Tour
on July 21, 2001.
The long-range objective of the Wellesley
Pesticide Awareness Campaign is to reduce the
exposure of children and adults to pesticides and
pesticide breakdown products which are known or
probably health hazards, to protect Wellesley’s
water supply, and to restore Wellesley’s land use
style to healthier and less toxic land care
practices.
Our partner organizations are helping us on
many fronts. NOFA is developing organic lawn care
standards and an organic certification course for
landscapers. Bread and Circus Whole Foods Market
is helping to distribute our flyers and advertise
our talks and seminars. The Wellesley Cancer
Prevention Project is helping us present forums on
the Precautionary Principle. The Needham Garden
Center is maintaining a full line of organic lawn
and garden products, and offers a 10 percent
discount to Wellesley residents on these products.
You can help us too, by doing your shopping at
Bread and Circus on Wednesday, April 4, 2001. For
more information on WPAC and our partners, please
visit our informational web site, www.ci.wellesley.ma.us/nrc/pesticide.
Thank you!
