Critique 1 - "Mom and Pop Art" - 900 words
Satire is a type of critique of human behavior, attitudes, institutions, or endeavors. It uses various comic devices to move its audiences to re-examine or re-evaluate their attitudes and beliefs about many things in the human experience. Satire can be light and funny, dark and devastating, or somewhere in between. At any rate, as an artistic device, good satire is often supposed to make you laugh, and think critically. The Simpsons is considered to be one of the best satires in television history. With that in mind, what is "Mom and Pop Art" satirizing? How? In other words, what are the targets of this satire? What does the script and action (words and visuals) suggest about those targets? Is it true and fair? Be specific by referring to dialogue, scenes, and images. Interpret and analyze your examples.

In composing your critique/essay for this assignment you should consider the following paragraph plan:

1. Introduction -- Give a brief definition of satire, mentioning that The Simpsons is an acclaimed example. Include a very brief summary of "Mom and Pop Art," then formulate a thesis statement that specifically outlines what the episode satirizes/critiques.

2. Body Paragraphs -- Provide, describe, and analyze at least three examples from the show that illustrate your thesis statement. Explain how the story criticizes its subject matter in various humorous ways, how it makes you think about the topic and the ideas or stereotypes associated with art and creativity.

3. Conclusion --Do you recommend this episode for viewing by most art and design students? Why or why not? Is it "good" or "bad," or a little of both? Again, be very specific.
