Hi Everyone,
Here is my current list of horse
(plus a few dog) books and magazines for sale. Depending on where you view
this, you may find a more current list at http://home.comcast.net/~lizstrauss/
Model horses for sale are also
listed at http://home.comcast.net/~lizstrauss/
All books are hardcovers with no
dust jacket unless otherwise specified. Books are *not* ex-library unless
stated. First editions are determined by "A Pocket Guide to the
Identification of First Editions", 5th revised edition. Minimum order is
$5, before shipping.
Shipping is not included, and
starts at about $2.23, for book rate. I can ship by priority mail, if you are
in a hurry. I don’t add any handling fees, and use recycled materials to ship.
E-mail holds are good for one week. Please list by author (preferably in
alphabetical order!), and if I list more than one of each title, be sure to
specify exactly which one you want.
Please don’t ask me to hold
something for you unless you are certain you want to buy it. I may be sending
this new list out to many people at the same time, but feel free to ask me to
e-mail you a current list any time throughout the year.
I have lots of positive feedback
on eBay, listed at http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=giantpetrelgal&ftab=AllFeedback
I'm always adding new
stuff to my list, so keep in touch, and let me know your wants. Thanks for
reading-

Susanne (pen name of Emily Ellen Scharf). Charm of the Shadows:
an autobiography of a show horse. The Hobson Book Press, 1943. 185 pp.
Marvelously illustrated by Helen Hayse (a student of George Ford Morris), with
89 small ink drawings, 12 full-page drawings, and 4 b/w illustrations that are
printed on glossy paper and tipped in (glued). Illustrated cover. Fiction told
from the horse’s point of view- a Saddlebred grows up in privileged
surroundings on an Old South farm, and goes on to become a show champion. The
facing pages of the tipped in illustrations are somewhat stained by the glue.
Very top edge of spine is sun-faded. Endpapers slightly foxed. Excellent
condition otherwise. Comes with pretty color dust jacket, also by Helen Hayse.
Dust jacket has some chips missing from the edges, mostly on the flaps, a long
closed tear on the spine, a small piece missing from the spine, and one light
stain on the front. Looks better than I am making it sound. Really exceptional
condition for this rare title. $275

outstanding show horses of the time are depicted. This edition is much harder
to find than the edition which came out in the 1960s. It has blue/gold
leatherette covers. About half the book is devoted to training of American
Saddlebreds and the balance to interesting stories about horses that excelled,
not only in the show ring, but as jumpers, endurance horses, cow horses, and
remount and range stock. Very readable. Pages are nice and clean, and the
glossy paper is of high quality (not wartime-type paper). Slight wear at top
and bottom of the spine. Covers are still nice and bright, however they are
marred by a few stains from a spilled liquid. Interior very nice. $45

possibly a 1st edition. 211 pp. There are 96 delightlful small
drawings, plus one full-pager, and a two-colored frontispiece, all by Diana
Thorne. I thoroughly enjoyed this one- based on a true story about Igloo,
celebrity aviator and Pole explorer Admiral Richard Byrd’s fox terrier (like a
long-legged Jack Russell). Between the well-written and often hilarious text,
and Ms. Thorne’s exquisite pen and ink drawings, Igloo’s intelligence, good
humor, and michievousness come alive. The forward is by Admiral Byrd; his last
word on Igloo Is “More Than a Friend”. Igloo is now buried in a famous pet
cemetary in Dedham, Massachusetts. Lovely old thick 1930s paper and pictorial
cover. Vvg condition. $15
