Environmental Science Class Policies

     1. Course Description: (1 Credit) Environmental Science is a laboratory based class which will cover the interdependence of earth’s systems,  renewable and nonrenewable resources, environmental quality, global changes and their consequences, and human population dynamics.  The five major themes (human population problem, sustainablity, urban world, global perspective, and values and knowledge) will be stressed.

     2. Requirements:
     A. Text: Environmental Science: Earth as a Living Planet by Botkin and Keller
     B. Small 3 ring binder for notebook.
     C. Hole-punch (optional)

     3. Assignments: I will put all of your assignments on Edline and any additional information I want you to have; this may include any schedule changes from the syllabus.  You are expected to check this site at the beginning of each week.   You are also expected to check your email daily, as I will communicate with you frequently.  For your convenience, on my Biology Webpage I have provided links to 1) a list of Environmental Resource websites, and 2) a Worksheet page, where you can copy questions, then paste them in a Word document to answer.
     4. Grading:
All grades will be posted on Ursuline's online gradebook and mygradebook.com .  Each student will have a password so she can access her grades online at any time.
Quarter grades will be calculated as follows:
    41%TestAve+ 18%QuizAve+ 18% LabAve+ 10%BookAnalysis+ 10%Notebook+ 3%Homework

                 Semester Grade:  (40% Quarter 1 Ave + 40% Quarter 2 Ave + 20% Midterm)
Final Grade: (Semester 1 Average + Semester 2 Average )/2

     5. Tests: Tests will usually be a combination of multiple choice, short answer and essay.  I expect each test to cover 2 chapters. The emphasis will be on applying the concepts learned.  Tests will count 41% of your quarter grade.

     6. Quizzes: Quizzes will usually test small amounts of material to see if you have mastered those concepts.  Quizzes will count 18% of your quarter grade.

     7. Labs: Labs will be due the day after they are completed in class, unless directed otherwise; this will include make-up labs.  Late labs will be docked 10 points.  Late labs may be turned in until the following Friday after the due date. Labs will count 18% of your quarter grade.

     8. Homework: Questions will be assigned for each chapter and will be graded for completeness. Late homework can be turned in one day late, but will not be accepted after that.  Homework counts 3% of your quarter grade.  Late Homework will be docked 1 point out of a possible 3 points.

     9Book Analysis:
You will be required to read one book per quarter.  The first book will be Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson. You will do a written analysis of Silent Spring, which will be due in October.  For quarters 2, 3, and 4, book analyses will be due in: January, March, and May respectively.    The teacher will supply the books, and you will have some choice in the selection of the books you read.  Any book removed from the classroom must be signed out.  You should be sure that the teacher signs the book back in once you return it to her. You are expected to return the books in essentially the same condition you received them.  If you plan on writing in the books, you should purchase your own copy. (All books can be purchased from Amazon.com) You are not allowed to write in any of the classroom books, and, if you do, you will be expected to pay for its replacement.  Book analyses which are late, will be docked 2 points out of a possible 10 points, and will only be accepted one day date. The Book Analysis will count 10% of your quarter grade.

     10. Environmental Current Events Notebook:
You will be required to maintain an Environmental Current Events Notebook.  You will collect  environmentally related current articles from newspapers and magazines, and analyze the information presented in the articles per the teacher's instructions.  One analysis is due each Friday (or one per week)- for the first 5 weeks of the quarter. The returned articles must be kept in a three-ring binder in some type of organized fashion (i.e. articles by topic, by region etc.). For the 6th week, the student will establish or update a table of contents, and review and evaluate the articles she has collected according to the directions given. The binder will then be due Monday or Tuesday of the 7th week of the quarter, and graded for organization, and completeness. (Due dates are October,  January,  March,  May ).  No articles/notebooks will be accepted late (unless you are absent.) The Notebook will count 10% of your quarter grade.

    11. Extra Credit- There is no extra credit.
