As the end of the year 2009 approaches, I must say, I will be glad to see it go. As GM employees, I hope we never have to go through what happened, and even worse, the realization and fear of what could have happened. It looks like disaster has been avoided - at least for now.
Out with the Old GM and in with the New GM. Ha, ha, ha. Wait, that isn't so funny. Too much is at stake for our families. The one thing that this adversity has seemed to have brought is increased awareness of the importance of our jobs and the jobs we do. This is not to say that we took our jobs for granted. There just seems to be an atmosphere more open to change and will to improve. We have some challenges ahead of us whether it be traditional or new work.
The Weld Tool design project is underway and going well. The guys are being challenged and are stepping up. Checking fixture design is now back at DES. The team has received their initial training. The plan is for DES to do the production design beginning with the Alpha program.
On November 9th, the last 8 of 50 that were laid off on July 20th were called back. With the exception of a small hole in January, the projected workload looks good through 2010.The number one question is, "When are we going to get a local agreement?" The answer is not until we reach a fair and reasonable settlement that addresses and secures our historic and future work.
As we approach the Holiday Season, I am thankful. Thankful that GM has a second chance. Thankful that all at DES are now back to work and have jobs.Unfortunately, some of our co-workers, whether they be salaried or contract, were not so lucky. Most of them were not deserving of the treatment they got. I wish them the best.
As always, be safe and all the best to you and your families.
