Tree Removal and Protection Notes

Congregation Beth El
June 18, 2002

Tree Removal, Grubbing and Trash Removal Locate and suitably identify and mark trees and improvements indicated to remain throughout site with the exception of the Creek Restoration Zone (CRZ). Work in the CRZ is under a separate contract.

Clear and grub areas within contract limits but outside Tree Protection Zones (TPZ) as required for and limited to site access and execution of the work. Remove all existing trash and debris from entire work area (including TPZs) to suitable off-site locations. Remove trees and shrubs according to plan and as directed by the Owner's Designated Representative (ODR). Retain but weed whip weeds and grass in areas not needed for access or construction. Do not strip these areas or TPZs of topsoil unless directed by the ODR.

Fell trees in a manner to prevent injury to persons, adjacent private and public homes and facilities and to trees scheduled to remain. Take note of shed and historic gate and fencing to remain.

Tree(s) to be removed that have branches extending into the canopy of tree(s) to remain must be removed by a qualified arborist and not by demolition or construction contractors. The qualified arborist shall remove the tree in a manner that causes no damage to the tree(s) and understory to remain.

Any brush clearing required within the Tree Protection Zones shall be accomplished with hand-operated equipment.

Trees to be removed shall be felled so as to fall away from Tree Protection Zones and avoid pulling and breaking of roots of trees to remain. If roots are entwined, the consultant may require first severing the major woody root mass before extracting the trees.

Use hand labor methods for grubbing of shrubs out in Tree Protection Zones. Motorized vehicles of any kind are prohibited in TPZs.

Completely remove stumps, roots, and other debris protruding through the ground surface.

Grind and remove stumps and roots to a clear depth of 36" below subgrades.

Fill depressions caused by clearing and grubbing operations with satisfactory soil material approved-by the ODR, unless further excavation or earthwork is indicated. Compact only to degree approved by the ODR.

Tree Protection

Temporary Fencing
Place temporary fencing around trees as shown in plan to avoid direct injury to root zones, trunks or low branches and to prevent soil compaction. Fencing shall be 48" high orange plastic mesh "snow fencing" secured with sturdy stakes sufficient to last 30 months and withstand trespass.

Storage
Do not allow sustained foot traffic, driving or parking of construction equipment or motor vehicles of any kind in TPZ. Do not allow storage of construction supplies of any kind in TPZs. Report any leaks or spills of lubricants, fuels or construction compounds spillage to ODR ASAP.

Wastes
Dispose of all waste properly at approved off-site locations in accordance with all applicable local and state standards and ordinances. Disposing of wash waters within TPZs and Creek Restoration Zone is prohibited.

Grades
Retain original grades in Tree Protection Zones unless directed differently by the ODR.

Limb Removal
Contact Owner's Designated Representative if any tree limbs greater than three inches in diameter need to be removed before or during construction. Do not remove limbs without review and approval by ODR.

Protection of Root Zones Within Construction Areas
All excavation and grading near trees on or adjacent to the site should be kept to the absolute minimum necessary. Great care should be taken to avoid tearing of roots; only smooth, clean cuts of roots may be made. Notify Owner's Designated Representative before grading or excavation within an 8-foot.radius of any main trunk.

Landscape Watering
Water trees and shrubs to be saved only as directed by the ODR.

Remedial Action
Tree health and vigor should be monitored at all times during construction, the maintenance period and the warranty period. If trees show signs of disease or decline, notify ODR immediately to discuss remedial action.

Replacement
The Contractor shall replace at his expense or otherwise compensate for any existing tree which is damaged by construction to a condition beyond the ability of the tree to recover to pre-construction conditions. The replacement or compensation will match in value the tree damaged.
