David Lock an old resident of Adams County Illinois, died in Richfield township, on the 22nd . Mr. Lock was born in Lincoln county Kentucky, on 29th of December, 1793. He enlisted in the 13th. regiment of Kentucky detached militia during the war of 1812, was honorably discharged in 1816, and has since drawn the regular government pension. After the close of the war he moved to Indiana and was there united by marriage to Miss Eleanor Hamblen, and was bereft of her companionship fourteen years ago. In the year 1823 he came to this state and built a house on Stone's prairie, near Payson. He returned to Indiana for his family, and during his absence, the prairie caught on fire, and when he came the second time, in 1830, there was nothing but ashes to mark the reward of his labor. For three weeks he lived in a tent with his family, consisting then of his wife and seven little children, and obliged to constantly keep up
watch fires around his humble dwelling to keep the prowling wolves at bay. He afterwards went to Camp Point, where he had entered land and built a home near that town in the winter of 1830-31, memorable for its heavy snows. The snow was severe that winter that the chinking of the logs on the outside was done with snow and it remained firmly in position until spring opened. In the year 1832, he purchased a farm in Richfield Township , removed there, and has resided on the same spot until the time of his death. Although known as a
successful farmer, he has shown much skill as an artisan ,and has particularly excelled as a millwright. In 1830 he built a small mill for the accommodation of himself and his neighbors. In 1832 on McCraney's Creek, he put up the first flouring mill, ran by water power, in this section of the country. In 1849. he built the fine steam flouring mill at the same place, that is now owned and operated by his son
Mr. H. A. Lock, and son-in-law Allen Lewton , Esq.
Mr. Lock possessed robust health and a vigorous mind till the close of his life. He had collected a valuable library, was an extensive reader and a gentleman of fine culture. In his declining years he spent much time in studying the word of God, and from its sacred pages traced the living light that
illuminated his pathway and enabled him to depart this life in the comfort of a reasonable and religious hope, which laid a firm hold on the bright immortality beyond. He leaves ten
children the youngest being 38 years of age, all of whom, excepting one son who resided in Kansas, where present at his last moments to receive his parting benison, and to perform the last loving offices their hands could render.
The early pioneers are fast disappearing. Yet it is to be hoped that we will ever kindly cherish the memory of those whose privations and struggles with the difficulties of frontier live, and to whose well directed eneavors and tireless energies we are indebted for may of the comforts and much of the prosperity that now surrounds us. The funeral took place on the 23 inst. ,Rev. R., Lierly officiating text taken from 1st Tim. iv.10.
Taken from the March 25, 1877 Quincy newspaper.
