Rules and Info

Officially our address is 37610 Lakeshore Drive, Beaver Island.  No one actually uses addresses so you probably never need this!

The phone number is 231-448-3122

We ask that guests use the phone for local calls only; you may use a calling card or credit card for long distance calls.

Check in time is 2pm.  If you get to the island earlier than that, you can try to see if the house is done being cleaned, but Veronica, who cleans, has until 2pm to finish.  Lots to acquaint yourself with in town before that, though. Check out is 10am.

Directions: Once you are off the ferry, or plane, get to Donegal Bay Road (landmarks are Daddy Frank’s Ice Cream parlor and Emerald Isle Hotel on the corner, and the Library.)

Head West on Donegal Bay for about 2 miles, until the road curves to your left at Lake Michigan. Continue driving south  - to your right will be the Public Beach.  Within ¼ mile, just as the road curves sharply to the left, you will see a sign saying “Private Road” straight in front of you. You will barely start down the private road since our driveway is the very first one on the left. Look for the sign with the Loon on it! At the top of the driveway our house is the blue one on the Left.

The door will be unlocked. It’s so safe on the Island that people rarely lock their doors, but if you feel more comfortable doing so, the front door key will be in the beach supply cabinet just outside the front door, hanging up.

Beds:

The master bedroom has a queen bed (and a private bathroom with shower). The other rooms down the hall have a queen and a full. There is second bathroom (with a shower/bath) down this same hall.  The study/library/room off of the living room has a single bed. (By the way, we call it the Storm Room.  Sit in there some night when a storm is blowing in and you’ll see why!)

Please bring your own linens-sheets, bath & beach towels. There are a couple of kitchen towels that you may use, but we ask that you clean them before you leave. We have plenty of pillows and blankets.

Beach chairs, umbrella, beach toys etc. are for you to use.  Please make sure that you bring them back up from the beach. When you leave the house at the end of your stay, please put all beach supplies in the storage cabinet outside the front door, where you found the items. There is a grill on the lower deck.

Kitchen/Appliances:

The kitchen comes fully equipped with pots and pans, plates and cups, silverware etc.  We also have a toaster, microwave and a coffee maker.

The washer and dryer are in the kitchen behind the French doors. House is also equipped with DVD, VCR and stereo.

Garbage/Recycling:

Because Beaver Island is so isolated, the handling of garbage and recyclables is VERY important to the Islanders.  Garbage is disposed of in large light green trash bags that can be purchased at McDonough’s grocery for $1.00 each (to cover the cost of the garbage disposal.  Before you add your trash to the green garbage bags, make sure you set aside all recyclables.  Almost everything that is not food waste is recycled on the island.  Both the garbage bags and recyclables are dropped off at the Transfer Station (marked on the map)

When you leave, please bring all garbage and recycling to the Transfer Station.

Beach Access:

First of all, please note that all of the land surrounding the property in our area is protected by the DNR and as such needs to be left untouched.

The two lots in front at beach access are privately owned.  The lot to the left is off limits, as you’ll see from the signs!  The lot to the right, with the new house, is where you’ll walk to the beach; follow the crude rock pathway if possible. Please be respectful of the property, however, and walk in one area.

We will have emergency numbers listed at the cottage.  Enjoy your stay!

-There is NO SMOKING in the house.  If you smoke outside, please be mindful and throw your cigarette butts away.  We had lots of trouble with this in the past and don’t want the outside property to be littered.

-Check-in time is 2pm; Check-out is 10am

-We are on a septic tank.  Please be mindful of your water use, so as not to overtax the tank.  No other products can go down the toilets besides toilet paper.

-Beach chairs, etc. are kept in the storage closet right outside the front door. You can leave things on the front patio area during your stay-no need to lock up.  When you leave, please place everything back in the storage

-The DVD player works on the VCR.  In order to use it, turn it on, turn the VCR on using the remote, set the remote to “Input 1.”  To use the VCR, just set it back to “VCR” or “Input.”

-Please make sure that you honor the land and not run on the dunes and native plants.  Our neighbors in front of us allow us to use their path to the beach.  Walk to the right of their house, then find the path marked with blue rocks.

-There are spices and some staples that you may use. If you use the last of something, please replenish for future use.  Same goes for paper products.

-If you break something, please do your best to fix it.  Or let us know soon so we can have it repaired or replaced.

-We ask that you be careful with dogs on the furniture or on the hardwood floors.  We know they can’t tiptoe, but please keep them from running excessively on the floors.

-There is a flashlight and a tool kit in the closet as well, in case you need them.  Please be respectful of them both. There are also ant traps in an Ace Hardware bag, in case there is an ant flare-up.

-We’re in the process of building our own library of interesting, current books (to balance the ancient romance novels we inherited!). If you’re reading a good book up here and want to contribute it, please feel free.

-One green bag for trash is supplied per week of stay.  Please take one from the kitchen drawer and place all bags of garbage in it.  Bring to the transfer station, which is off King’s Highway, near the Welke Airport.  Please dispose of trash!

-Beaver Island is blessed with an active recycle program.  Please make sure you RECYCLE all plastic, glass, metal and paper/greyboard.  Bring them to the transfer station with your green bag of garbage.

Cleaning you may need to do:

-The vacuum cleaner is located in the closet of the 2nd bedroom.

-Cleaning tools are in the washing machine closet; plenty of supplies under the kitchen sink. Sand tends to gather in the house rapidly, so you may need to sweep occasionally for your comfort.   Please let us know if you need something.

-Please close the window blinds when you leave.

In case of any major breaks or emergencies, call me in Ann Arbor at

734-996-3973.

Most importantly, HAVE A GREAT TIME AND ENJOY THE ISLAND!
