          RE IMAGINED

The WB proposed new series based on the 60’s version of Lost in Space to be aired in fall of 2004. Like the 90’s movie version the purposed series attempted to modernize the characters. All though some modification of characters is necessary to make such a show prevalent in today’s environment, grate care has to made in changing a well established story line not to a fend a shows original fans. Lost in Space original premises was fairly good. The problems Lost in Space suffered from bad writing script writing especially in the 2nd season. Also with today’s special effects technology a much better series can be produced at a reasonable budget.

Having seen some of the actors slated, it seemed like it may have had decent line up, Brad Johnson as John Robinson, Jayne Brook as Maureen Robinson, Mike Erwin as Don West, Adrianne Palicki as Judy Ext. Although many people didn’t like the robot design which I have not seen and the inner actions between Judy and Don this for me was not a problem. A situation like this can add some continuing character development is some thing the original series lacked. However one problem I could see is making Penny an infant. Not to say that someone having a baby in the future if such a series continues wouldn’t be a bad idea. But having an infant at the start of such a mission just doesn’t seem to make any sense. Just Keep Penny a pre teen. Another change was to add another Robinson male older than Judy. This may make things a little more interesting.

The biggest problem with this new lineup was no Dr Smith. The main premise of both the series and movie was Dr. Smith in his attempt to program the robot to foil the mission was trapped in the craft. In the first part of the season one he was much more devious and conniving but seemed to develop a fondness for the Robinson family that he at one time tried to destroy. Later any further character development stopped just as with Don and Judy do to the fact that the writers must have been afraid to make any changes in the stations quoi. Jonathan Harris who played Zackary Smith past away in 2002 just before he completed a Lost in Space anniversary show.

Do to the fact that the cast of the WB’s 2004 version of Lost in Space are probably doing other jobs that project is probably scraped; in fact the stag to be used for the Robinsons Lost in Space was bought by the producers of Battlestar Galatica and is being used for the interior of the Pegasus another Battlestar. Maybe in the BSG’s off season a new made for TV mini can be put together.

For various reasons I envisioned a scenario where Doctor Smith would be a young to middle aged female older than Don and Judy but younger than John and Maureen.
