Frequently
Asked Questions
Will AMSOIL Motor Oils
void the warranty of a new vehicle?
Absolutely not! Manufacturers.
warranties are based upon the use of oils meeting specific API
Service Classifications, for example, SJ/CF. (AMSOIL lubricants
meet the current API Service requirements and, thus, are
perfectly suited for use in any new vehicle without affecting
the validity of the new vehicle warranty.)
How do AMSOIL products
compare with other synthetic lubricants?
We do have four
ball wear charts and
Noack charts comparing AMSOIL with other synthetics. We feel
these are two areas that can be compared that will affect the
performance of the products in a way that can be explained to
consumers. Most synthetics have similarly good typical specs,
but the performance from better additives, more shear stable VI,
higher TBN, etc, can not be easily demonstrated with a test or a
chart. These attributes of AMSOIL show up by controlling acids
in the oil, eliminating corrosion in the engine, maintaining
viscosity throughout the drain interval helping improve
performance in the areas of fuel economy and cold weather
starting, keeping contaminants in suspension until they get to
the oil filter for removal or the oil is drained, and generally
keeping the engine cleaner and deposit free. These benefits are
not easily demonstrated with a test or a chart. They are only
noticeable in actual use. As we find areas where comparisons can
be made to demonstrate differences between AMSOIL and other
synthetics, we will do them. In the meantime, it is testimonials
from dealers like yourself and customers that provide the best
credible evidence that our products are formulated to perform.
How long have AMSOIL
lubricants been on the market?
AMSOIL introduced the first
synthetic motor oil with an API (American Petroleum Institute)
Service Classification in 1972. Since that time, AMSOIL has
varied and expanded its product line.
What are AMSOIL
Synthetic Motor Oils?
AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants are
fuel efficient, extended life lubricants manufactured from
select synthetic base stocks and special purpose additives.
These lubricants provide improved overall performance
characteristics when compared to conventional petroleum oils.
Can AMSOIL Motor Oils
be used in any engine?
Certainly, AMSOIL Motor Oils may be
used in any mechanically sound gasoline or diesel fueled engine.
Basically, that means they are excellent for use in any
vehicle's engine.
Are AMSOIL Motor Oils
All-Season Oils?
Synthetic oils are made to protect
and perform better than petroleum oils at both high and low
temperature extremes. That's why every jet engine in the world
is lubricated with synthetic oil. AMSOIL Motor Oils have
extremely low pour points and flow readily at extremely low
temperatures for easier winter starting and significantly
reduced engine wear. At high temperatures, no conventional motor
oil can compare to the overall protection AMSOIL Synthetic Motor
Oils provide. That's extremely important for today's
turbocharged and small, non-turbocharged engines!
Will using AMSOIL
Motor Oils increase gas mileage?
Tighter government regulations and
increases in engine manufacturers. demands are calling for more
fuel efficient lubricants. AMSOIL Motor Oils reduce friction and
drag better than petroleum oils, resulting in significant fuel
economy increases. In a recent 1.2 million mile demonstration,
AMSOIL Lubricants showed a 4.5% increase in gas mileage. Other
tests have shown increases of as much as 15% under certain
weather and driving conditions. Yet, because every vehicle is
different, as are driving habits and conditions, it is difficult
to accurately project an exact increase.
Are AMSOIL Motor Oils
compatible with other motor oils?
Yes. AMSOIL Motor Oils are
compatible with all other synthetic or petroleum motor oils but
not recommended ( having petroleum motor oil mixed in detracts
from the superior performance of AMSOIL) but there is no danger
in doing so.
Why are AMSOIL Motor
Oils capable of extended drain intervals?
AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils are
highly resistant to the destructive effects of heat, and do not
break down like petroleum oils. This means that AMSOIL Motor
Oils can provide much longer drain intervals than conventional
lubricants.
Will AMSOIL Motor Oils
decrease oil consumption?
Yes. When used in mechanically
sound engines, AMSOIL Motor Oils can reduce oil consumption.
Under test conditions, a reduction of as much as 42% was
demonstrated for prolonged periods. However, this should not be
taken to mean that AMSOIL Motor Oils are .cure-alls. for engines
that consume oil because of mechanical problems.
Is there a recommended
procedure for changing to AMSOIL Motor Oils?
There are no special requirements;
however, in older vehicles or those with high mileage, it may be
advisable to use AMSOIL Engine Flush first. This will ensure
that the engine is clean and free of any accumulated
contaminants which might have an effect on the service life of
AMSOIL Motor Oils. In all cases, it is good judgment to install
a new AMSOIL Super Duty Full-Flow Oil Filter (SDF) every time
you change oil.
Should Oil Additives
or After Market Products be added to AMSOIL Motor Oils?
No, they are not necessary! AMSOIL
Motor Oils are properly formulated under the strictest Quality
Control procedure to provide superior lubrication performance.
I sometimes hear
"Synthetic oils contain detergents that can make the oil
seals leak in older cars." Is this really an issue? How old
would a car have to be to not use synthetics?
Synthetic lubricants do have an
inherent detergency that cleans and removes conventional motor
oil deposits left over in an engine. However, motor oils are
designed to help swell seals slightly to prevent leakage. The
only time you would observe seal leakage is if the seals are
already damaged or showing signs of leakage around them. As long
as the vehicle has been well maintained, and in good mechanical
condition, it can be switched to a synthetic lubricant at any
mileage.
Will my warranty be
void if I don't change my oil every 3,000 miles?
NO, To affect the vehicle warranty,
the lubricant must be directly responsible for the failure. If
the oil did not cause the problem the warranty cannot be voided,
regardless of the brand of oil used, or the length of time or
number of miles the oil was used. To flatly inform the customer
that the use of AMSOIL synthetic motor oil voids their vehicle
warranty is not true. It is not supported by OEMs and damages
AMSOIL INC. AMSOIL INC carries liability insurance and offers
our customers complete warranty coverage for oil related
failures, should one ever occur.
I should I change my
oil when it gets dark, right?
This is absolutely NOT TRUE. The
color of an oil does not have any bearing on its lubrication
ability. Most oil and especially diesel engine oil will turn
black in the first few hours of operation due to contaminates
generated by the combustion process and soot particles. The ONLY
way to accurately determine an oil's lubricating value or
contamination level is through (spectrographic) oil analysis.
The useful life of an engine oil is dependent on several factors
such as the quality of the oil, type of fuel, equipment
condition, type and operating environment of the equipment and,
most important, the type of filtration used. The filtration
system and the oil are vital tools for preserving engine life.
Will my oil pressure
or idle rpm change when I switch to AMSOIL?
They might. AMSOIL has a better
friction reducer than conventional oil and friction directly
affects oil pressure and idle speed. Since synthetic oils don't
have to "push" as hard to overcome friction as
conventional oils do, the oil pressure drops. The engine still
has adequate circulation and protection it just doesn't have to
work as hard.
How long has AMSOIL
been around?
AMSOIL was founded in 1972 with the
introduction of the first 100% synthetic motor oil to gain an
American Petroleum Institute performance rating and has led the
industry ever since in the development of synthetic lubricants.
