Granada
High School has once again added jazz band to the curriculum It
has been since the late 1980's since either of the two high
schools in Livermore had a jazz program. Thanks to Kevin Drake,
the GHS principal, jazz is back. Mr. Drake was not able to
promise a budget to support the program but has some how scraped
together enough money to purchase a few charts and pay for a few
jazz festivals for which the students could attend. So far the 20
piece jazz ensemble have far exceeded my expectations by quickly
developing into an outstanding high school jazz ensemble. They
have earned very high ratings in the two jazz festivals they have
participated in thus far.
The
future of this program is uncertain due to the severe budget
restraints the Livermore School District is facing. It is my hope
that enough funding can be raised to support the high school jazz
program so we can continue to offer a positive jazz experience to
our students.

Working
to raise $60,000 for a strings teacher to keep the 4th
grade strings class Last
year the school board voted to cut the general music program at
the 4th & 5th grade level as well as half the funding for the
elementary instrumental program. This resulted in the loss of two
music teachers (20% of our entire music staff) as well as two
part-time music aids. We were able to raise enough donated funds
($50,00) to reinstate one of the music teachers, which saved our
4th grade beginning string program from being eliminated. The
donated funds came from Wente, elementary PTAs, Livermore Rotary
Club, local music stores, Livermore Valley Education Foundation
(LVEF) and a benefit concert that Al Steward was kind enough to
donate his time and talents to support our elementary music
program. Thanks to past contributions we have been able to
offer a beginning strings program to approximately 300 4th grade
students throughout the district. In order to maintain this
program we will need to raise $50,000 to $60,000 each year until
the district can afford to support it again. Unfortunately the
funding for public schools at the state level does not show any
signs of improving in the near future. Any support you could help
generate would be greatly appreciated! We are thrilled to have
Wente and the Summer Concert Series supporting music in our
public schools. Wente has always been a great supporter last year
we were able to bring back 4th grade music instruction and we
could not have done it without Wente's help. Music program
are being cut all around the state we are very lucky to have such
wonderful supporters in Livermore. Kate Runyon,
Co-President Livermore Valley Educational Foundation (LVEF)
