TIPS FOR COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVES

Every elected official is sensitive to grass-root opinion. Your participation in government should not stop with your vote, but there's an art of communicating with your representative.

* Inform your legislator of your stand on issues of particular interest to you--briefly and to the point.

* Refer to his position on the issues, if known.

* Thank him when he supports an issue of which you approve.

* Write promptly and plainly; a post card is acceptable.

* DON'T write too often to the same legislator during one session, even on different subjects.

* DON'T begin with "As a citizen and taxpayer," and DON'T apologize.

* DON'T write to legislators from another district.

* DON'T be discouraged by special interest lobbies. People can be a powerful lobby.
