THE MANGUM & RELATED SURNAMES DNA PROJECT

TESTING RESULTS

Return to DNA Page 1                                                                           LAST MODIFIED JANUARY 2007

We now have DNA results from 41 individuals. We also have the results from 7 individuals (Robertson, Chambless, Griffin, Crow & Duke) who are not members of our Mangum surname group. Their results are summarized in the tables below. The table includes all markers tested, up to 76, although some individuals had only 12 markers tested. It is not necessary to understand everything about the tables, including just what the numbers actually refer to, in order to understand the results. If you wish to know, please visit the Family Tree DNA website and read some of their tutorials. In general the numbers represent the numbers of repeated identical molecular groups in each identified marker on the "Y" chromosome. In other words, a 15 in a particular marker means the DNA of the individual tested contains 15 identical molecular groups, one after the other, at that particular site. Other individuals, particularly unrelated individuals, may have 14 or 16 or 17, etc. at that particular site.

The important information is whether the numbers for each person matches the numbers of other participants in the database, and how closely they match. The other important item is the Haplogroup (HLG), shown in purple in the table. The Haplogroup shows which major group of ancient humans the individual participant descended from. R1b is a very common group for those with a European heritage.

FOOTNOTES
1. HLG=Haplogroup, defines which group of ancient humans this individual descended. All the Haplogroup designations in our surname group are estimates based on markers, but the Haplogroup has not been specifically tested for
2. DYS 19 is also known as DYS 394
3. The marker headings in red above have shown a faster mutation rate then the average, and therefore these markers are very helpful at splitting lineages into sub sets, or branches, within your family tree
4. DYS #389A [Yellow] is not a true marker as reported by the lab, but is calculated from the values generated by the lab for markers #389-2 & #389-1. To regenerate the number for the actual marker (389-2), simply add #389A & #389-1 together. See additional explanation after the Summary.
5. The mutation rate is the rate that the particular “Y” chromosome marker will mutate when it is passed from father to son. A 2.5 in the table means a rate of .0025, or 0.25% chance [1 chance in 400] of a mutation in each generation. The average mutation rate is about 2.8.
6. The Standard Mangum Markers are those markers supposedly passed on by John Mangum the immigrant to all his descendents.
7. Individual markers in red are those mutated from the ‘Standard Mangum Markers’ plus some others that show variation between individuals in other groups.
8. Participant from another surname group but included here for informational purposes. @@=No number available.

FOOTNOTES
9. The interpretation of these yellow markers (464a-464d) for Thomas Maugham (Table on English surnames) compared to Ellison G. Mangum is a little quirky. When comparing markers, the absolute position of the values in the group cannot be determined, so a 17 in one group is always a match with a 17 in another group, no matter what in position each resides. Also, multiple differences between markers, like between a 15 and 17, always counts as one marker difference. See the The Quirky DNA Markers link for a full explanation. See also the discussion under Ellison G. Mangum & the Maughams.

NEWEST MARKERS

(New markers from Family Tree DNA above 37 and 9 markers from DNA Heritage. The markers ‘DNA Heritage’required submission of a separate DNA sample. This early experiment with DNA Heritage was undertaken to determine the usefulness of adding 11 additional markers to the 37 we originally had from Family Tree DNA Labs. After Family Tree DNA offered a 67 marker test, only 9 markers from DNA Heritage were new)

[NOTE: DNA Heritage Lab required that we test at least 23 markers although they offered only 11 markers we had not already obtained from Family Tree DNA. Therefore all the others were duplicates of Family Tree DNA markers. The value of one of those duplicated markers (# GATAH4) from DNA Heritage always differed from the value obtained from Family Tree DNA. This was simple a result of different nomenclature used by the two labs. The marker value at Family Tree DNA (for those participants who tested 37 markers) was 11, and at DNA Heritage (for those four that tested it) was 12. Therefore when comparing your results to DNA Heritage participants, “1” should be added to the value from Family Tree DNA.]
