THE ROSE PHOTOCD
Roses of Lauderdale & Limestone Counties, Alabama

The Rose Family PhotoCD is now available. It is a collection of about 1200 photos, from tintypes of the old family to recent photos of their descendents. The earliest photos, including tintypes, are of Samuel Adam Burney Rose (the civil war veteran) and some of his siblings. The majority of the other photos are of descendents of Samuel Adam Burney Rose but we have photos from some of the descendents of Burtice Rose and William Jefferson Rose, both siblings of Samuel Adam Burney Rose. We have photos of all the children of Samuel Adam Burney Rose, except those who did not reach adulthood.

I. How do you view the photos? The CD is designed to run when you place it in the CD drive on your computer.*** It will automatically bring up your Internet Browser, which is hopefully Microsoft Internet Explorer. [Netscape is not totally supported.] You will then be able to view your photos as if you were viewing an Internet web page. You will not have to be connected to the Internet because all the web pages are on the CD. You will have a "Table of Contents" menu with clickable links to thumbnail pages. Each thumbnail page contains up to 15 small images of photos of a particular theme, such as "Our Oldest Photos", or "Lynn Parham's Family". Under each thumbnail (small photo) you will find a clickable link to a high resolution photo. This photo resides on a page by itself & can be made larger or smaller by clicking two buttons. Most photos have identities and many have descriptions of the circumstances, dates, etc of the photos. It is very easy to use. Also, instructions are given for manually accessing the photos for your own use, whether printing, e-mailing or manipulating with your own graphics software.

Click HERE to see an example of a thumbnail page, and an individual high-resolution photo page!

***If your CD does not automatically run, you must manually run the program ”Front.htm” in the main directory of the CD. To run, just double click on the file.

II. What equipment do you need? A computer with a CD-ROM drive and an Internet Browser. The browser should be Microsoft's Internet Explorer, preferably Version 5 or above. Computer should be a modern type with at least a VGA color monitor. The faster computers will load the high resolution photos faster, but a reasonably fast computer will suffice. A color depth of 256 colors is sufficient to see the color photos, but a higher color depth of 16 or 32 million colors is best if you system supports it.

III. What is the cost? We decided early on that we would not try to make money on this enterprise, or even try to cover our vast amount of labor we put into it. The object of the project was to preserve our Rose Family Photo Heritage. To that end we have decided to "sell" the CD for $5.00 each [includes postage] when mailed and $3.00 each for additional copies ordered at the same time to the same address. This is little more than the cost of CD blanks, labels, packaging and mailing costs. We will, of course, accept donations if you want to contribute to the continuing effort on this Rose photo project, but we have decided not to actively solicit such donations. Our goal is to place a copy of the CD in as many Rose family households as possible.

NOTE: If there is any real payment requested, it is this!! We want you to use the CD and report any errors you find. These may include broken links or other CD problems, or it may include errors in the identities or descriptions of the photos of your family. The CD has instructions on how to report these errors. Also, you may find that the CD does not have a good balance of photos for your family. In that case we ask you to submit additional photos of your family as instructed in the CD. Presently we have room for a lot more photos, and the CD will be continually updated as corrections or new photos are received.
