Layout Design ElementsThis project layout makes use of a series of Layout Design Elements (LDEs) pulled from the "must have" list. Conceptually, an LDE stands on its own regarding theme, location and purpose. The city of Duluth, for example, wouldn't be an LDE candidate because of its sheer size and diversity. However, the locale of Iron Junction would be; it is small, has a manageable amount of track, in fact, a unique track arrangement, and a limited set of details, including a depot, signal department building and water tower. Now that the basic sub-structure of the layout is complete (2006), I will be incorporating any new construction progress as LDE's instead, since work now will focus on replicating real features of the DM&IR. Thus, there will be towns, yards and mines taking shape on the layout. To see more details of any LDE, click a link to the left.
