The LayoutThe layout is located in the basement, 60 x 24, with a 4 x 30 foot bump-out. There is one outside door, a stairway descending into the middle of the room, and I share the space with the mechanical necessities of a house - furnace, water heater, well tank, water softener and air exchanger. The layout design began with a list of "must have" items, as well as the "nice to have"s. These are spelled out in the Requirements page. I was going to design this layout to accommodate both late steam and 1980's diesels. Maybe with the change-out of a few items, both scenery and equipment, this would be possible. As I have begun building, it seems too much of a stretch. Far too many of the features of the 1950's had completely vanished by the 1980's The basic design is a two-level, around-the-room shelf layout, with a peninsula into the center of the room. The end of the peninsula houses a helix to connect top to bottom. See Space for more one what's available, and how I am filling it. Construction methods are described on the Construction page, including preliminary build efforts and a piece on Super elevation. |
