Layout Design Guidelines

This document was the precursor to designing the layout.  The two eras idea arose because of extensive collections of equipment from both eras, since I couldn't decide which I liked best.

Era:

  • Primary era: 1950-1958

  • Secondary era: 1979-1980 (I've pretty much given up on this - Steam/Diesel is too much fun!)

Required locations/features:

  • Duluth ore dock

  • Proctor Hill

  • Proctor Yard

  • Burnett Bridge

  • Rust Crusher/Yards

  • Rouchleau Crusher/Yards

  • Iron Jct.

  • Saginaw

Preferred locations/features

  • Missabe Jct. as connection to storage (DWP/GN-BN/CNW/SOO/Endion)

  • Adolph as connection to storage (CNW/DWP/Steelton)

  • Downtown Hibbing including GN-BN (and storage?)

  • Downtown Virginia including DWP (and storage?)

  • Biwabik (and storage?)

  • Wilpen

  • Mitchell

  • Minntac with run-through pellet loading (for 1980’s era)

  • Shelton Jct. (and storage?)

Thoughts:

  • Big radii, mostly double tracked.

  • Real proportions of mainline, that is, long run from range to Duluth, and long trip down the Hill.

  • No long reaches for the 0-5-0

  • Two-level design is probably necessary for length and features requested.

  • Some storage tracks could be back-to-back, that is, Missabe Jct. could run through to Steelton, Shelton Jct. could run through to Virginia, etc.
