The ability for humans to stand upright has evolved over a millennia
of time. Although years of misuse while sitting at desks in school and
observing poor modeling examples, combined with the pull of gravity,
have interfered with our natural reflex to be upright, the Alexander
Technique offers a way to restore ease and balance while performing daily
activities. The results of misusing our bodies are pain, discomfort, tension, fatigue, and even the lowering of our overall health. Actors, singers, musicians, athletes, and others whose performance depends on well functioning bodies, have turned to the Alexander Technique for help. But anyone experiencing pain or physical discomfort while carrying out daily activities, or who simply wants to improve his posture, will benefit from lessons in the Alexander Technique. Many people make sporadic attempts to improve their posture and body use by attempting to maintain a fixed set of bodily postures, but the ensuing pain and fatigue make such efforts fail. A student of the Alexander technique learns to release tension and allow the ability for being upright to function naturally. With the help of a teacher, the student learns to identify and to inhibit harmful habits of use, and to experience how it feels to move with poise and ease. |
