Apple's PowerBook 3400 supports cardbus cards but the PC card cage is not a cardbus cage. The only real obstacle to using cardbus cards is the different notching at the corner edge of the card. A cardbus card cannot physically be inserted into a PC cage without some sort of modification to either the card or cage. I chopped away some of the notching on a Newer FW2Go cardbus card to allow it to fit into my 3400's card cage. Once it physically fit the cage the card worked fine with my external FW HDs. |

Here's a comparison of three cards, top is an unmodified cardbus DVD video PC card, middle is the modified FW2Go card and on the bottom is an unmodified PCMCIA ethernet card. Using an exacto knife I simply trimmed away part of the ridge at the corner to allow the FW2Go card to insert into the 3400's cage. That just seemed an easier route than slicing and dicing the cage. |

Here's a shot of an actual cardbus cage, this inside a PB Wallstreet. Note the groundplanes surrounding the connector area. The 3400's cage lacks these of course. Yes, this Wallstreet was actually as dirty inside as it looks in this pic. |
