PowerBook 5300 power connector replacement

I bought a 5300c with a broken power connector (heh heh, yeah, pretty unusual I know!) I reckoned I'd just send it in for the REA but looking at the busted power connector I figured the replacement would be just as lame. Plus, I haven't any spare 190/5300 style power supplies, but do have tons of regular PowerBook PSes. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to use one of those, just like all my other PBs use?

Sooo, armed with a power connector (l'll call it a 'PC' from now on) swiped from a dead Duo's logic board . . .

Here's the Duo's connector, I broke the shell's tab on the opposite side (doh!) The center connector isn't going to be used in this application, so I just cut it off.

With the old connector removed I could see the new PC should fit just fine with a little futzing. The main impediment is the fuse(?) directly behind the old PC , but there's enough room to shove it forward and leave space for the new PC.

The new PC will need to be mounted so that its left-hand mounting tab is in the original ground solder point. That way the new PC will fit inside the case and stiffener. Look at a PB3400's LB and you'll see how it should go.

The new PC needs 3 holes, a mounting tab on each side and a positioning post in the middle. I used the Duo's LB as a pattern and drilled the 2 new holes, and enlarged the original ground hole so the new PC mounting tab would fit.

Some of the precision tools used for these delicate operations . . .

Not soldered in yet, but looking good! I had to bend and trim the pos and neg PC pads so they would land in the right places. The brass is rather brittle so I ended up breaking off the pos lead. I fashioned an extension from some copper (and lots of globbed-on solder!)

Ahh, soldered in and looking . . . very messy! Oh well, at least it works!

Next step is to enlarge the hole in the back of the case. Having a PB3400 on hand makes it a bit easier to see how it should look. Well, this isn't the prettiest I could do, but it'll suffice for now.

I had to do some futzing to get the PC and hole to line up nicely. I adjusted the position of the PC on the LB, plus did some extra case filing to get it to fit.

And here it is assembled and working, pretty nice being able to use a regular PB PS!!
