Urusei Yatsura est l'un des mangas les plus connus qui soient au Japon. Publié dans les années 70, il s'y est vendu à plusieurs millions d'exemplaires. En France, il sera proposé en version "bunko", mini format de plus de 300 pages, dédié aux classiques de la bande dessinée japonaise.

Urusei Yatsura is one of the best known mangas ever in Japan. Published in the '70's [sic, it was mostly in the '80's], it has sold many millions of copies. In France, it will appear in a "bunko" version, a mini-format of more than 300 pages, dedicated to the classics of Japanese comics.

[The French edition really does correspond pretty much exactly to the Japanese bunko version. Nothing whatsoever is skipped - even the afterword in volume 1 by Mitsuru Adachi is included. Of course then it suffers from the same issue as the Japanese bunko - i.e., it's really tiny! Fortunately, teeny-tiny French is easier to read than teeny-tiny Japanese, and fortunately as well Takahashi's art style is simple enough that there's not too much detail to lose, but you might want to double-check your reading glasses prescription before diving into this one.

[Otherwise, it really is quite a faithful translation, being rather more conservative than the Viz version in terms of substituting jokes - where there isn't a close French equivalent, they do the best they can, and then add a note explaining what the original joke was. Of course, the explanations are in a 4 point font....

Synopsis : Ceci est l'histoire de deux jeunes étudiants du nom de Chise et Shuuji. Chise est dans la même école que Shuuji et est très amoureuse de celui-ci. Elle décide de lui avouer son amour et ils sortent ensemble. Mais leur relation ne marchera pas bien au début et se formera peu à peu par après. Malheureusement l'histoire ne s'arrête pas là. Lors d'une balade avec ses amis, Shuuji remarque des avions près à bombarder la ville. Les habitants pris de panique fuient. Shuuji observe peu de temps après dans le ciel, une sorte de machine qui détruit tous les avions. Ensuite, il se trouve à terre, heureusement vivant et voit au loin, une silhouette cachée par la brume. Après que celle-ci se soit dissipée, il commence à reconnaître la silhouette. C'est Chise! Sa petite amie qui a, à la place de son bras un canon et des ailes métalliques dans le dos. En effet, Chise est la machine qui a détruit les avions et est en fait l'arme ultime qui est chargée de protéger le Japon. (kinga)

Commentaire : L'histoire n'est pas trop mal même si elle est un peu dure à comprendre quelque fois. L'auteur à un très beau style mais il est dommage que le manga bascule dans l'érostisme à la fin de l'histoire. La fin est assez surprenante et nous laisse songeur. (anaelle)

[The French title makes a great pun - Larme Ultime (Final Tear)/L'arme Ultime (The Ultimate Weapon). There's a similar pun possibility in the Japanese title (Ultimate weapon/ultimate coolness), but I have no idea whether it was intended. (French and Japanese both have pun potentialities which put English to shame. Well, assuming *not* being able to make a pun is something to be ashamed of.)

[Anyway, at the start the story seems to be a kind of dull shoujo romance, but it soon enough turns out to be nothing of the sort.]

[It's a sports manga! But it's shoujo! So that means this time it's a girl (Namiho Sakurai) who has the talent but doesn't take the game seriously, until events intervene and she finds the whole team is depending on her. And to be sure, there'll be lots of training, and "secret" techniques learned, and so on.

[So how is it any different being shoujo? Well, it's a lot cuter than Slam Dunk, and there's boy trouble galore. Yes, I'm being rather flippant, but all in all it's not badly done. If you're at all interested in the concept, you'll probably like the manga. By the way, the interior artwork doesn't look as juvenile as cover; it really is high school level.

[The Let's Volleyball story itself is fairly short, in three parts, taking up only about half the volume. The rest of the volume is taken up with two other stories. The first is another volleyball story (with different teams) - this time, it's girls vs. boys, as arrogant boys' team captain Tabata challenges girls' captain Atsuko Tomita and her squad to a match - three against six! Atsuko strives to whip her team into shape in time, but the other girls seem more interested in deciding which boys' team member is cuter than in trying to beat them. Oddly enough, though, the boys' team subcaptain Eno shows up to help out. Just what (or, rather, who) is his real interest?

[The last story is more or less pure sports-free shoujo, unless you count Rumi's thrashings of Kominami as a sport. However, it's also the most amusing of the lot. Middle school student Rumi Arima is flunking out in math, a situation hardly improved by her classmate Kominami's relentless needling. So Rumi's mother hires university student Taniguchi as her private tutor. Taniguchi just happens to be a dreamboat, kind, mature, gentle, all the things Rumi ever thought she'd want in a man, and the exact opposite of Kominami. But somehow that annoying Kominami contrives to show up during all her tutoring sessions, saying he's there to protect Rumi's virginity from the older man. No guesses on how things end up!

[The Végétal edition is as usual unflipped, with the katakana sound effects preserved. It seems a bit better finished than the other ones of theirs I've seen. In particular, they called in professional help (a French volleyball team coach) to ensure all the volleyball terminology was correct.]

[Difficulty: moderate, given the amount of dialogue and the hard-to-read fonts occasionally used. However, the story is always very easy to follow.]

Commentaire : Ecrit par Kazuo Koike et dessiné par Goseki Kojima, Kozure Ôkami (Le Loup Errant, jeu de mots sur Ôgami, le nom du héros, et Ôkami, qui signifie "loup") commence à paraître en 1970 dans le magazine Manga Action. Presque simultanément, il est édité sous forme de volumes. Il existe deux formats de takôbon, une de poche, en 28 tomes et une autre plus grande, en 14 volumes, identique en contenu.

En tout, il s'est vendu plus de 8 millions d'exemplaires du manga dans son pays d'origine, une performance appréciable pour une oeuvre de plus de 8000 pages ! Le succès est tel que Kozure Ôkami est adapté sous forme de films, d'une pièce de théâtre et même d'un disque (ou le jeune Daigoro est supposé chanter !).

D'un point de vue formel, le manga, qui raconte l'errance d'un ronin et de son jeune fils dans le Japon médiéval, est sous l'influence directe des films de samouraïs (chambara), il est donc logique que, dans un mouvement presque "naturel" de retour aux sources, il ait suscité des adaptations live, plutôt qu'une série d'animés. Commentaires : Un très bon manga, un de mes derniers en date, le dessin est très agréable et beau. Simple et fluide. L'histoire est bien trouvée, c'est drôle et les personnages sont attachants. Les filles sont bien dessiner et elle sont très jolies ... @Lire (Pïkouze) ^_^

[The fan (service) favorite, out in French pretty much in parallel with the English version. Everyone's made up their minds on this one by now, I suppose. I do think the manga is generally better than the anime, if you care.]

[Unflipped, even preserves the sound effects and the initial color pages, by and large. If you liked the Macross 7 TV series, you'll presumably like this. And if you're a Mikimoto fan, this is a must-buy. Note that Trash is a side story (gaiden), which was in fact made after the anime, rather than the other way around.

Commentaires : C'est un manga de Clamp pour un public plus jeune que Tokyo Babylon ou X, cependant, l'histoire simplette du début ne peut pas rester telle quelle avec Clamp. Le tout est arrosé d'une bonne dose d'humour et d'un irrésistible Mokona! Dommage que l'inversion des pages nuise tant au dessin. (S'M'G)

This is a manga from Clamp for a younger public than that for Tokyo Babylon or X; however, the simple story at the start can't stay that way with Clamp around. [The Tonkam version is "deluxe" - unflipped, fairly large format, thick and with some color pages. No stories are being skipped, either. Oh, and "Juliette, je t'aime" was of course the name given to the French version of the anime.

[I've done some comparisons with the original and the Viz edition, for the first volume at least. This is a little unfair to Viz, since their first volume is their weakest, in my opinion. At any rate, here are a few rough notes; I might follow up with a more detailed comparison later.

[Tonkam generally goes for a straighter/more accurate translation than Viz, but doesn't always strain to try and render all the wordplay in the original. (Once, though, I think they just missed a joke that Viz caught - the reverse is true at another point.) At times the Tonkam version might read a little flat, but I find it generally more acceptable than the crudity of the Viz version. (I don't mean crude in the sense of dirty, but rather in the comic-book-style language being used.) And in case you're wondering, in the Tonkam version they use "Monsieur le raté" and "Madame la concierge"; in general, they preserve the naming and degree of formality in the original, to the extent the language permits.

[In terms of print quality, the Tonkam version, though darker, is considerably better, not suffering from the "Photoshop wipeout" and occasional censorship of the Viz version. By "Photoshop wipeout" I mean the sort of over-cleanup, wiping out the lighter gray levels, that American manga versions, both Viz and Dark Horse, seem prone to. A good example of this is in "Soichiro's shadow": after Kyoko slaps Yusaku, the handmark on his face is magically erased in the Viz version, which makes you wonder how his friends still notice it. (There's also some magical erasing on Kyoko's body earlier in the story, which is some of the "occasional censorship" I was referring to above.)]

[Yes, it's a manga series inspired by the Atelier series of simulation/RPG games. Ordinarily, I'm rather leery of game-based manga, but somehow I ended up really liking this one. Occasionally there are what appear to be nods to events and characters from the games, but by and large the manga is self-contained; the game references just make for more depth for the story.

[The feel is rather like Slayers (especially Slayers Special): fun in a medieval Europe-like (here Germany) fantasy setting, with richer and occasionally darker undercurrents. However, Marie and Elie are in character somewhat different from Lina and Naga. Marie is a bit of a klutz at times, but very adventurous and resourceful - maybe halfway between a Lina and an Ameria, with a touch of Naga (in terms of her outfit and drinking habits) thrown in. Elie is the more studious and cautious one, sort of like - well, Slayers doesn't really have that so much, so let's say a Sailor Mercury type. A whole crew of secondary characters, each with his or her own quirks, develops around the pair.

[One major difference with Slayers is that the cuteness and niceness factors are tuned up at least 50-60%. Yoshihiko's artwork comes off as more cute than beautiful, especially when compared to the original Atelier video game artwork (by Kohime Ohse). Marie and Elie end up in SD form much of the time, and the secondary characters' quirks tend to the, well, cute: the warrior with the pet kitten, the nun who hankers to go flying (via magic broom, not Sally-Field-headgear-style), the forest imps who become Marie and Elie's apprentices. And (almost) everyone is just so darned *nice* - even some of the bad guys are coerced to reform by Marie and end up on the nice side.

[Difficulty: moderately easy to moderate, depending on how much fantasy-type terminology is introduced. The story tends to advance in a somewhat scattershot fashion, with lots of shifting back and forth between scenes, which might make for a little difficulty. However, the plot itself is quite well laid-out, better than most mangas, though how on earth they can tie all the loose ends together in the last volume (assuming they do) is beyond me.

[All in all, definitely recommended, but actually finding a copy of can be tougher than most RPG quests!]

[I suspect anyone in the U.S. who'd be considering Marmalade Boy would already know whether he or (more likely) she would like it. But briefly put, it's in some ways the archetypal shoujo teen soap opera, livened up by Wataru Yoshizumi-sensei's deft touch. The manga moves quite quickly, by the way, with a good number of relationships already come and gone (and, sometimes, come and gone again) in the first three volumes. One thing I liked about it is that none of the characters are really "evil," merely confused or misguided. Of course, you might get a little tired of the number of "confusions" which upset the relationship between Miki and Yuu.

[My main personal gripe is with the ending (last two volumes). Perhaps I've just read too many similar things, but I had pretty quickly figured out the "truth," more or less, so I kind of lost patience with the denseness of the main characters (Yuu in particular). Also I think Meiko ends up making the wrong choice, though I suppose the author would disagree with me there. The part that *did* surprise me was the ending originally planned by Yoshizumi-san (sketched in an afterword to the final volume) - that would have been quite a bit more shocking, I'd have to admit. OK, enough of the dancing-lightly-right-on-the-edge-of-spoilers talk.

[Anyway, I guess it says something about the story that I cared who made what choices - I mean, does anyone really "care" which girl Keitaro ends up with in Love Hina, or Tenchi in Tenchi Muyo, except in some abstract sporting sense? ("See, my girl won!") Not exactly a fair comparison, I'll admit, but still, you see my point. My final verdict is that this is the teen soap opera to get, if you're only getting one. And there are only eight volumes, so what the heck!

[Difficulty: Like most shoujo teen soap operas, it's fairly dialog-intensive, but seemed to me a bit easier in terms of vocabulary than some. So, moderately easy to moderate.]

En quelque sorte un "Matrix pour les enfants", les aventures de Megaman sont tirées du jeu vidéo japonais "Megaman Exe", un jeu d'action/aventure semblable à Pokémon dans lequel notre héros Lan se connecte à Internet. Dans la matrice, il dirige Megaman, entité virtuelle qui combat les virus. Un univers riche et cohérent avec beaucoup d'humour, et de références au merchandising ambiant (jouets, cartes à collectionner).

Les situations grotesques dans lesquelles se retrouvent le chat tigré sont extrêmement drôle et tellement réalistes qu'on voit facilement là l'oeil d'un spectateur de chat avisé qui s'imagine les histoires qui explique les comportements félins. Cat lovers (among whom I count myself) can but laugh themselves to tears in reading this manga. The grotesque situations in which the tabby cat finds himself are extremely funny and so realistic that you can easily sense the eye of a well-informed observer of cats who devises stories which explain typical feline behavior. [All right, all right, the nominations are closed; we have a winner! Min Min Mint is without a doubt the silliest manga ever to appear in French translation. Or English translation. Or any translation. Or even untranslated, for that matter. Well, probably not the last, but let's not spoil the rhetorical point.

[A "plot" summary: One evening, for no particular reason, a magic cat-boy named Lime shows up at temple Min Min and gives Mint(o) Kanbara the power to transform into... uh... Mint... but with pink hair and a rather peculiar pink version of her usual temple robes. The pink hair doesn't go away (which leads to some awkwardness at school the next day), but the magic outfit is another story - it's extremely touchy, and bolts the scene immediately whenever it feels in the least slighted. Which happens about every five pages or so, in what may be a new fan service record. Fortunately, after the first couple times, this doesn't seem to bother Mint all that much. Certainly it will not bother Mint's fans.

[Mint's enemies/friends (it's hard to tell sometimes): Let's see, her grandfather, the temple priest, has a hobby of constructing giant killer robots, for which he keeps forgetting to create any controls. And then there are the other girls at school, who all more or less fall in love with Mint sooner or later:

[Reiko Kuonji, a Tomoyo Daidoji (from Card Captor Sakura) grown up all sort-of-evil, who wants nothing other than to dress Mint up in *her* outfits;

[Kaoru Mito, "The Bell," the fifteenth in a long line female ninjas, who decides she wants to perpetuate that line through Mint, a concept which Mint definitely does *not* want to explore;

[Moka Usami, a mecha freak, who comes over to give Mint's grandfather a hand with the robots, and also to get *her* hands on her "darling big sister Mint";

[Cocoa, a cat-girl-who-doesn't-look-like-a-cat, who came to keep an eye on her fiancé, Lime, but unfortunately ended up at the wrong school and temple because she got her towns mixed up;

[And Ajisai, president of the student council and closet cosplay fan, who seems to be about the only boy at the school; he tries to maintain a super-cool demeanor, only to have it break down any time he sees a girl in costume, which is pretty much all the time.

[In other words, what we have here are all the silly parts of a magical girl story, mixed in with a harem comedy where just about all the roles are filled by girls. (Ajisai only shows up for a couple of pages here and there and promptly gets clobbered each time, so he hardly counts.) For all that, though, it's far more fun than annoying. And, despite the nudity and peculiar relationships, it's all quite innocent, really. Good clean naked fun. The artwork is, of course, an otaku dream, though it must be a strain on the girls to carry all that "equipment" around.

[Difficulty: Well, the "meow-speak" of the cat characters might give some pause (or "paws," heh, heh), but by and large it's rather easy. The difficult part is making sure no one catches you reading this!]

Wataru Yoshizumi concocte une histoire délicieusement drôle et cocasse, avec le talent et la sensibilité qui l'ont déjà rendu célèbre à travers le monde.

Mint Na Bokura is the latest series to date from the author of Marmalade Boy. This time, we are asked to follow the sentimental tribulations of elementary school students. [Hmm, they're actually in middle school/collège.] Wataru Yoshizumi has concocted a deliciously droll and comical story, with the talent and sensibility for which she is already celebrated throughout the world.

[If you've read much of Yoshizumi-san's work, you're familiar with her usual method - start with a ridiculous premise, but then examine it more or less realistically, all the while leavened with, as they say, her trademark humor and sensitivity. Sillier than Marmalade Boy, and directed toward a younger crowd, but on the whole still an enjoyable read.

[The Glénat edition seems pretty good. Like Marmalade Boy, it's flipped (seems to be their practice with shoujo romances). One difficult bit to render from the original is how Noeru mixes up "boys" and "girls" speech. (The title itself is an example, using a boy's form of "we.") Glénat did an OK job, I guess, but I'd think it's possible to do better in French.

Explicit titles (relatively explicit, especially if you're familiar with the universe of Lewis Carroll. If not, all you have to do is read), full to overflowing with female libertines, which mixes unbridled (but camouflaged) sexuality with virginal purity. The illustrated expression of the desire of a girl on the verge of womanhood, with all the subtext that carries with it. Revealed nudity, phantasms and reality, for a work juggling banter and Clamp-esque humor.

[Uh, ok, whatever. The Tonkam edition is "art-book like": large format, "deluxe" cover, a number of color pages... As for the content, well, it's Clamp being silly in a number of short pieces that weren't really intended to be collected together, I think. Despite the attempted titillation in the blurb above, this one would really only be labeled PG-13 at best.]

Commentaires : Il n'y a qu'un seul mot pour décrire cette oeuvre: époustouflant. La dessin est très agréable et l'histoire est vraiment bien ficelée. A dévorer d'urgence. Le meilleur titre actuel en manga avec Nausicaä et Hunter x Hunter, AMHA. (Rody)

There is only one word to describe this work: astonishing. The artwork is quite nice and the story is very carefully constructed. To be devoured at once. The best current manga title with Nausicaä and Hunter x Hunter, IMHO. (Rody)

[Well, I would call the artwork "competent, at times quite powerful, but not exactly 'beautiful.'" However, leaving it at that would be to miss the point entirely, which is that Urasawa is making a fairly strong bid to be the legitimate heir of Tezuka. By that I mean he is telling a real story with real characters faced with real problems. In fact, while not as grand in scope as some of Tezuka's efforts, Urasawa's plotting is on the whole much tighter and more coherent.

[As for the art, while not likely to decorate too many web pages and desktops, it functions admirably in its role. (It is clearly based on some very good fieldwork; I've recognized a number of the locales from my own time in Germany.) The work is masterfully constructed, and although not really a mystery, is full of surprising turns. I will second Rody's very strong recommendation.

[Kana's edition is very good, though as usual they seem to have some trouble with "foreign" terms - in this case, with some of the German names and such. But as usual this is hardly a serious issue.

[An initial plot summary: Kenzo Tenma, a Japanese surgeon possessed of remarkable dexterity and technical expertise, has come to Dusseldorf to work at the famed Eisler Memorial Hospital under its director, Dr. Heinemann. Tenma begins, however, to realize that he is simply being used by the latter to further his own political and social aims. As an act of rebellion, Tenma works to save the life of a young boy (the apparent victim of a robbery/murder attempt), rather than perform the surgery demanded by the director. Tenma succeeds in saving the boy, but a series of mysterious deaths then ensue. Could Tenma, in fact, be in some way responsible for them? Who is this boy, and what really happened to him and his family?

[Difficulty: Moderate. There is an amount of medical terminology here and there, which is however not hard to figure out if you know the English equivalents. However, the story is more dialogue-driven than many current manga, and a good understanding is required to really follow the story.]

Commentaires : Une vision très noire de notre futur comme Otomo sait le faire, des jeux de regard, une morale intéressante, et au final une impression étrange d'une Terre pas très joyeuse. Le scénario manque cependant de profondeur. Bonne qualité d'impression. (YT)

A very dark vision of our future as only Otomo can make it, a few treats for the eyes, an interesting moral, and in the end a strange impression of an Earth not that joyous. The story however lacks depth. Good print quality. (YT)

Commentaire : Histoire glauque mais trés prenante de différentes histoires de meurtre. Le graphisme est a[s]sez réaliste et les pages blanche sans décord assez froid va trés bien avec l'atmosphère de ce manga. (julie)

Commentaire : La Musique de Marie est un manga époustouflant! L'histoire est captivante, les personnages très attachants, le tout incroyablement poétique. Le graphisme est tantôt simpliste et néanmoins tout à fait réaliste (pour les personnages) tantôt magistralement précis (pour les paysages). C'est un monde qui rappelle un peu l'univers des jeux Myst et Riven, pour les connaisseurs. (lacastafiore)
