["Laddish escapades"??? Uh, OK. Amusing teen soap opera; if you like Peach Girl, this one is even cleverer, I think. Nami Akimoto (author of Miracle Girls) sure can tell a good story. I will say that, for "rivals," Ami and Noa seem to be doing a pretty fair imitation of best friends at times. But then, that's the way it can be during those crazy, confused teen years, right?

[I should mention that, unlike Peach Girl, there aren't clear hero(ine)s or villain(esse)s in this series; both Ami and Noa can be devious as well as fine and upstanding. (Still, any sane person has to favor Noa, IMHO. Hah!)

[By the way, the English blurb above isn't quite right - "Miyamu" (as the teacher prefers to be called), a.k.a. "Zipper" (the nickname the girls give him, based on an unfortunate incident) usually does try to help Ami and Noa's plans to succeed, whether they want him to or not. (And they definitely do not...)

[Incidentally, it turns out Akimoto lived in France for a while, and is apparently quite fluent in French. Dunno if she had anything to do with this French edition, though.]

Moi qui n'aime pas du tout Kenshin, j'ai été tout de suite séduit par les premiers tomes de cette histoire de samouraïs. Et puis au bout de 4 ou 5 tomes, on se lasse. Ca dégénère trop en baston. By the author of Slam Dunk. The artwork is always nice enough even though the style of the author is hardly recognizable IMO. Even I, who didn't like Kenshin at all, was quickly seduced by the first volumes of this samurai saga. And then after around 4 or 5 volumes, [I] dropped it. It degenerates into mere fighting. Je voulais juste dire que ce manga est fabuleux a tout point de vue, d'une part il est superbement bien dessiné, avec des styles de dessins allant de la plume a l'aquarelle; d'autre part il transcrit tout a fait l'esprit du roman d'Eiji Yoshikawa, édité en 2 tomes en france dont les titres sont "la pierre et le sabre" et "la parfaite lumière". Pour les fans de miyamoto musashi et de fantastique je vous conseil de lire "la voie du sabre". (Florian)

Commentaires : L'édition de Samouraï est de bonne qualité (sans plus) et tres fidèle à l'originale (même couv', etc.). Comme maintenant un peu partout sauf chez Glénat et les trucs transitant par les US, on a même droit aux onomatopées en katakana. (XH)

The Samouraï edition is of good quality (but no more) and very faithful to the original (same cover, etc.). As we are beginning to see everywhere, save for Glénat and the stuff come by way of the U.S., they have even preserved the katakana sound effects. (XH)

[This version is of course long out of print, so the cover scan I have is of the Japanese version. As mentioned elsewhere, Atomic is redoing all the Vampire Miyu manga, both original and "New." Yes, it is confusing that the original series is being continued, and so now is newer than the "New" series, isn't it?]

Commentaires : Des histoires à 2 francs sans aucune relation entre elles (ou presque). Des scènes qui arrivent comme un cheveu sur la soupe en plein milieu des enquêtes (si on peut appeler ça des enquêtes...). Et quand l'auteur nous dit en page 2 de couvertures qu'il a fait de nombreux essais avant de nous pondre cette BD, on rigole doucement... En gros Asamiya n'a pas fait de progrès depuis l'idiotie qu'était Compiler... De plus, ses persos ont tous le même visage reconnaissable et pas très réussi "à la Asamiya" (mais bon, ça c'est pareil pour toutes ces oeuvres...). Y'a peut-être un espoir pour que ça plaise un minimum aux 8-12 ans.(Rody)

25 cent stories without any relation between them (or just about). Scenes which arrive like a hair in the soup in the middle of investigations (if you can call them investigations...). And when the author tells us on page 2 of the cover that he made numerous attempts before laying this comic on us, you really have to laugh... Basically, Asamiya hasn't made any progress since the nonsense that was Compiler... What's more, all the characters have the same face, recognizable (not very successfully at that) as being "à la Asamiya." (But OK, it's the same for all his works...) There is perhaps some hope that this will at least please the 8-12 year old crowd. (Rody)

Ce manga de Yuki Nakaji va combler les amateurs d'histoires d'amour. Suzuna aime se sentir libre, indépendante et profiter de sa vie d'étudiante. Ce qui ne l'empêche pas de rechercher l'âme soeur. Mais la réalité répond rarement à nos attentes et nous met même parfois à rude épreuve. Ainsi, Suzuna est confrontée chaque jour à Eiichi, un camarade de classe qui ne cesse de la tourmenter. Heureusement que son meilleur ami, Fukami, est un garçon aussi gentil que séduisant.

Une comédie romantique pleine de piquant !

Commentaires : Un manga qui ne parle pas du Japon, ni des USA, mais de l'Australie. On retrouve des termes porteurs tels que les I.A. et l'écologie. Mais 'Version' est surtout un scénario qui tient bien la route. Version est aussi la prochaine version de ... de quoi? lisez le bouquin. (SD)

A manga which speaks not of Japan, nor the USA, but of Australia. Found therein is language laden with concepts from AI and ecology. But 'Version' is above all a story which holds together well. Version is also the next version of ... of what? Read the book. (SD)

Ce manga est rempli de très bonnes surprises. La qualité du dessin est excellente, l'histoire rebondit sans arrêts. Sakaguchi écrit son scénario en virtuose, aussi a l'aise dans les commentaires techniques que Shirow, et parfaitement capable de pondre de personnages très, très attachants. Sa mort est une perte terrible. (ME).

This manga is full of very good surprises. The quality of the artwork is excellent, the story bounces along without a letup. Sakaguchi writes his scenario as a virtuoso, just as much at ease in his technical commentary as Shirow, and perfectly capable of creating the most affecting of characters. His death is a terrible loss. (ME)

[Note: the French edition seems to have been made from the Dark Horse one. This book is a collection of the first series of Version (released by Dark Horse as Version 1.1 through 1.8) I suspect the reason Glénat never published the second volume is that Dark Horse never quite finished the Version 2.XX series.

[Difficulty: moderate, save for the Sakaguchi techno-speak, which can be almost as tough as Shirow at times.]

Ai is a video girl. She lives in a video cassette and helps boys with a broken heart. Ai is coming to the aid of such a one when she emerges from the television; unfortunately, the VCR isn't working very well and her character is somewhat modified.

Commentaire : L'histoire est vraiment bien mais... et oui il y a un mais, le problème c'est que le héro est un personnage trop indécis sur ces sentiments. Il est gentil et c'est son principal défaut car à vouloir faire plaisir à tous le monde il se fait du mal et cause plus de troubles qu'autre choses. Mais on s'attache à lui car on veut qu'il s'en sorte. On le voit s'affirmer surtout quand il sauve Aï. Ce que j'aime dans ce manga ces aussi la passion qui existe entre Aï et Moteuchi. C'est une belle histoire sur le sens et la valeur de l'amour. Jusqu'où iriez-vous par amour? (little lady)

[The French version is flipped, but is taken from the original (uncensored) Japanese version. This is one of Tonkam's earlier efforts, and supposedly does suffer from a little looseness in the translation. I haven't really looked at that issue in any detail myself. (I'll confess I ran out of steam in the middle of volume 9 and haven't gone back to finish it yet.)

[Video Girl has been through several reeditions at this point, including the deluxe "aizouban"-style one below; the original edition has also been redone, though I guess it's still flipped, unlike the deluxe one...(?)

[Difficulty: lots of whiny internal monologues make it moderately difficult at points.]

Un nouvel opus et deux nouvelles déclinaisons, après un petit flash back par la case Aï/Yota, sur le thème de la vidéo girl. Mais une vraie nouveauté: l'écriture. Quelques images pour le plaisir des yeux, pour mieux connaître les personnages, mais le reste est un flot de mots. Des mots qui vont décrire les tourments de Shuji, amoureux de Mi[y]uki et écrasé par l'aura d'un grand frère qu'il place lui même au dessus de sa tête pour mieux courber l'échine. À You de jouer, elle qui ne peut se permettre un nouvel échec dans sa rude tâche de panseuse d'âme.

One new work and two new declinations[?], after a brief flashback through the case of Ai and Yota, on the theme of the video girl. But one novelty: writing. A few pictures to please the eyes, to better know the characters, but the rest is a sea of words - words which describe the torments of Shuji, in love with Miyuki and crushed with the aura of a big brother which he puts on his own head, the better to bend his back. [A French expression, meaning roughly, the better to submit himself to his (self-assumed) fate.] It's up to You [that is the video girl named You, not y'all out there] to fix things, but she can't suffer another failure in her job as bandager of souls.

[Three Video Girl tales, which at 50-70 pages each are more novelette-length than novel. The author, Sukehiro Tomita, apparently made his reputation writing script treatments for anime, and it does kind of show, especially in the Ai Amano tale. At times, this sounds more like someone summarizing the manga (or perhaps the OAV version) than telling a story. It focuses almost exclusively on Ai's relationship with Yota - Moemi only shows up for one scene, er, chapter, while Takashi stays almost entirely offstage.

[The second story, with You Kagetori, was ok, though the love triangle of Shuji, Miyuki and Shuji's big brother Yuichi (Yuitchi in the text) was rather repetitious of the Yota/Moemi/Takashi triangle in the Ai story. But at least Shuji, after the requisite amount of moping, does confront things directly, sort of. And You is far and away the cutest of the video girls, for whatever that's worth.

[The third story, with Yume Kayama, is the most interesting of the three. Yume, an experienced video girl, has grown rather tired of the whole bit of consoling wimpy boys feeling sorry for themselves. Imagine her surprise, then, when her video is checked out by a *girl*, Miho. And far from being wimpy, Miho is quite sure of herself, to the point of being more than a little bossy. What she's not sure about, though, is her self-designated sort-of boyfriend, Takeshi, who used to be a fine, upstanding student like herself, but has recently taken to cutting classes and playing around with motorcycles all day. Yume decides to go talk to Takeshi directly, only to find he's even a harder case than Miho. How can Yume handle these two, who don't seem particularly susceptible to her charms?

[As I've made fairly clear, I have mixed feelings about this one. But on the positive side, the writing, or perhaps the translation, picks up as the book goes on; some of the descriptive passages especially in the later stories are rather nice, worthy of "real" fiction. Tomita explores in some depth the melancholy existence of the video girls, condemned to live with no real past and no real future, existing as only peripheral goads to those who rarely appreciate them. You and Yume do find happiness of a sort (Ai is a special case), but I don't think it's the sort of "happiness" most of us would care for.

[To be honest, if you're just interested in sampling manga-inspired "novels," I'd recommend the Shin Kimagure ones (at least the first one) before this. But if you're a Video Girl compleatist, oh well, what's another 9 EUR? There's also a silly "bonus extra" 3-page comic featuring all the video girls at the hot springs, as well as a small gallery of color and black-and-white illustrations.

[Difficulty: Well, we're talking nearly 200 pages of text - fairly straightforward text, to be sure, but at times somewhat of a challenge in terms of vocabulary (particularly motorcycle terminology in the last story), so it's probably not something which is reasonable to undertake if reading represents much of an effort, at least in my opinion.]

[Here's another one which I know will drive some readers to distraction, but I actually kind of liked. If you've ever read Japanese women's magazines (hey, there's a stack of them at the local sushi take-out place, with nothing else to read while I'm waiting), you know what to expect: short, inconsequential daily-life vignettes, all with a happy (or at least wistful) ending. Aoi is rather on the whiny side, but fortunately Kai is infinitely understanding. "Why can't my husband be more like that?" sighs the intended audience, a 25 to 35-year-old married working woman with 0 to 1 children.

[The Végétal edition is unflipped, preserving the katakana sound effects and the like. It would have benefited from an additional editorial pass though, given the number of misspellings and typos I encountered.

[Difficulty: easy to moderate, depending on how chatty Aoi happens to be feeling.]

[Note: "La vie en rose" seems to be a popular title; there are several other French books, including another B.D. series, which use this title. And of course:]

More early Clamp wackiness, a pre/co-cursor of the Clamp Campus Detectives. (It started earlier, but Clamp didn't finish it off until after the Campus Detectives started, so you'll see some references to the latter in the final stories.)

[Warning: While filled with the usual fun Clamp weirdness (e.g., Akira has two mothers, who seem to be mirror-image twins and act like two-year-olds, and his romantic interest Utako is in kindergarten, just recovering from a failed relationship with her teacher(!)), there are also long discourses on the nature of love and relationships that even Clamp seems to admit get a little tiresome occasionally.

[No, I don't get where the "Some Ofer" or possibly "Some Offer" title came from, but I've seen it listed several places.]

[Difficulty: I'll say moderate, given especially the pontifications of the school doctor and Utako's sister.]
