Not too bad a manga provided you get caught up in the story. But the artwork spoils things a bit... (Pikouze)

Bon, c'est plutôt laid question dessin: du shôjo bien typique avec des yeux pleins d'étoiles (enfin, laid... les personnages masculins, pas tant que ça...). Mais question scénario, je dois admettre que ça démarre plutôt bien, et en plus ça avance relativement vite... tout en restant furieusement romantique comme tout shôjo qui se respecte! J'espère que ça durera ^^ (Ashura)

OK, it's rather ugly from the standpoint of the artwork: typical shoujo with the eyes full of stars (well, ugly... the male characters not so much so...). But from the point of view of the plot, I have to admit that it starts off rather well, and more than that advances rather quickly... all while staying furiously romantic like any self-respecting shoujo! I hope that that continues ^^ (Ashura)

La quintessence du shôjo classique! Graphiquement: assez horrible (avec les yeux 'pustulleux' [euh, 'pétillants', peut-être?]); scénaristiquement: outre l'histoire d'amour impossible dont on sent le dénouement tragique à 15 kilomètres, l'histoire en elle-même est assez prenante, surtout à cause du Japon post-apocalyptique qui y est développé. The quintessential shoujo classic! On the artistic side, not quite horrible (with the "sparkling" eyes [I'm assuming that's what it's supposed to be and not "pustulant"!]); as for the plot, aside from the over-the-top saga of impossible love where one can sense the tragic denouement from 15 kilometers off [around 9 miles for the metric-adverse] - the story itself is interesting enough, especially due to the post-apocalyptic Japan in which it takes place. Commentaires : Pas mal d'action, un peu d'érotisme, beaucoup d'humour, un cocktail pas trop mal dose et surtout vachement bien dessine, sauf que l'adaptation française est TRES laide. Ca ne vole pas très haut mais ça se lit sans déplaisir... (As)

Not half-bad action, a little sexiness, and plenty of humor, all make for a cocktail that's not too hard to take and above all truly well drawn, except that the French adaptation is *very* ugly. It may not soar too high, but you can read it without displeasure... (As)

Si les 10 premiers volumes sont vraiment agréables à lire, exemple parfait d'héroïc-fantasy bourrin et violente, l'histoire perd énormément de sa qualité après la disparition d'Anthrax, la divinité du mal. Si les dessins ne font _que_ s'améliore au fil des volumes, et que l'humour est toujours présent, le scénario part vraiment en haut de boudin (pour ne pas être plus vulgaire) dans les derniers volumes sortis. Although the first 10 volumes are truly a delight to read, a perfect example of brutal and violent heroic fantasy, the story loses much of its quality after the disappearance of Anthrax, the god of evil. If the artwork only gets better during the course of the volumes, and the humor is always present, the plot truly goes to the dogs (to not be too vulgar) in the later volumes. Too bad. (A.V)

I have edited it to correspond to my version, which reads a little better.] Belle Starr (1848-1889) Belle Starr, de son vrai nom Myra Belle Shirley (ou encore Belle Reed ou Belle July), était surnommée "la terreur de la prairie en jupon". Ce personnage a réellement existé. Mais si j'ai conçu mon histoire à partir du récit de sa vie, je n'ai pas voulu me limiter à la réalité. En 1873, par exemple, Belle Shirley devait avoir 25 ans. Certains récits de l'époque rapporte qu'elle déclarait avoir vingt ans. J'ai donc décidé de lui donner 20 ans au moment où cette histoire commence. Commentaire : Malgré que cette série soit destinée pour un public averti, je trouve que c'est un très bon mélange de fantaisie, d'action et d'aventure. Je trouve que l'auteur a fait un très bon travail pour ce qui est d'incorporer à l'histoire une intrigue politique et plusieurs secrets qui seront dévoilés au cours de l'histoire. Il est facile de deviner qu'il avait un scénario solide avant de débuter son histoire. De plus, j'adore le style graphique plutôt sombre et je trouve que jusqu'à maintenant la traduction est bien rendue. Pour ceux qui ont vu le dessin animé et qui ont aimés, je vous conseil de vous procurer cette série pour enfin savoir ce qui se passe après le fameux épisode 25. (Sauleil Ménard-Lamarre)

Commentaires : La version "remasterisée" que nous présente GC car ce manga existe depuis plus de 20 ans. C'est un manga assez sombre mais bien prenant. On voit bien que le style graphique est assez vieux mais cela donne un certain "charme" à la lecture...à voir les prochains tomes (Pikouze) ^_^

Au départ, Black Cat peut sembler proche d'autres mangas déjà connus par son scénario entre autre mais au fils des tomes il trouve sa propre identité et les personnages deviennent attachant, l'histoire s'étoffe et nous réserve quelques bonnes surprises (laetisan)

L'histoire est très bien organisée et malgré quelques dessins laissant à désirer le style de Kentaro Yabuki est digne de compter parmi les places sûres du Weekly Shonen Jump. De plus même si l'on ne commence pas par le premier tome on comprend aisément le but de l'histoire. Et surtout, le traitement des personnages, beaucoup plus subtil que la moyenne des shônen, fait échapper une très large partie du casting aux stéréotypes habituels, ce qui rend tout ce petit monde fort attachant. [The blurb above is fairly accurate as far as it goes, but doesn't address the main point about Bleach - it's one of the cleverest (and funniest) shounen adventure stories to appear in some time. Kubo's artwork is competent, if nothing extraordinary, but he's a far better writer than the norm, at least through the first five or six volumes. However, I will agree with Ashura that things tend to go downhill a bit after that, as it molds itself more into an ordinary fighting manga.

[F.Y.I., Ichigo means "strawberry" in Japanese, which presumably is where "the death and the strawberry" title (for volume 1) comes from. One of the oddities of Bleach is that each volume, and most of the chapters as well, have bizarre, but bizarrely appropriate "English" title like this.

[A wish-fulfillment-style romantic comedy which turns into a harem comedy of sorts when sort-of rivals to Aoi show up. "Oh, no! Not another Love Hina clone!" you're saying. Well, no and yes. First of all, it's not technically a clone, since it apparently started a bit before Love Hina. And the "rivals" are never really serious ones. (Though, come to think of it, that's mostly true in other harem comedies, too.) But the main point is that the back story of Kaoru's "certain reasons" make for something a bit more interesting (to my mind at least) than usual for the genre, at least through the first few volumes.

[I think with any of these series, your feelings about it will depend almost entirely on your tolerance level for the main characters. If you find Aoi to be a wimpier-than-Belldandy crybaby, you're not going to be very happy with this one. But if you find her (quietly) interesting, it works pretty well. And a least Kaoru is not annoying, unlike some of his counterparts in other series. Though they do make that "girlfriend as mother substitute" Freudian subtext more explicit here than anywhere else I've seen. In fact, it's not subtext; it's text! Ah well, somehow I ended up liking this one more than I wanted to, if that makes any sense.

[The artwork is of course "professionally cute" throughout, at least if you don't mind the characters' noses disappearing periodically. Unfortunately, the writing does start to drop off in quality in later volumes, where it seems Fumizuki kind of ran out of plot, and ends up at times being little better than a fan service fest. I guess this is where I mention the original is serialized in "Young Animal Magazine...."

[The Pika edition looks good, unflipped (as are essentially all of their series these days) and on the larger end of the tankoubon size range. To render Kaoru's (normal) and Aoi's (formal) speech patterns, they have Kaoru "tutoyer" (use "tu" forms) all the time, while Aoi "vouvoyer"s. I guess that's ok, though it gives me the odd feeling of Kaoru being Aoi's dad or something. (Kind of cutting in the other direction from the "girlfriend/mother" one.)

[Difficulty: moderately easy. There are a lot of internal monologues, but figuring out what's going on is never an issue. And of course, slang has no place in Aoi's presence.]

Tout est beau dans Bouddha: le sujet, le trait naïf, les personnages qui ne sont jamais que gentil ou méchant. Bref, c'est la BD la plus humaine qui soit, elle explore le caractère des hommes avec une justesse remarquable. Difficile de poser le livre avant d'avoir fini de dévorer les 400 pages. L'adaptation est très bien faite et les amateurs de Tezuka en version originale remarquerons que la narration du maître a été respectée. Même, par rapport aux fantaisies de l'auteur comme certains anachronismes ou la façon de jouer avec la construction de ses cases. Bien sûr, rien n'est parfait en ce bas monde. Certaines bulles ont dû être inversées, mais cela n'entrave pas vraiment la lecture. On a simplement l'impression que des personnages réagissent à retardement: du style, la réponse avant la question. On souhaiterait aussi que le lettrage change. Je crois sincèrement que tous ceux qui liront Bouddha, commenceront à percevoir le manga autrement. (FJ)

Everything is wonderful in Bouddha: its subject, its unaffected nature, its characters who are never simply good or evil. In short, it is the most humane of comics, which explores human nature with a remarkable justness. Difficult to set aside before having devoured some 400 pages. The adaptation is very well done, and the admirers of Tezuka's original version have remarked that the narration of the master has been respected. Even in respect to the whimsies of the author such as certain anachronisms, or his fashion of playing with the construction of his panels [?I think that's what's meant.] Of course, nothing is perfect in this imperfect world. Some of the dialog balloons are swapped around, but this doesn't really get in the way of the reading. You simply get the impression that some of the characters react slowly, with the answers coming before the questions. One might also wish for a change in the lettering. I sincerely believe that everyone who reads Bouddha will begin to look at manga in a new light. (FJ)

Indigne en tout les cas d'une production de Tomino, comme Yukiru Sugisaki nous la présente. S'il a travaillé à partir d'une nouvelle du papa de Gundam, il n'en a pas fait grand chose de bon... (A.V)

Nice enough art, but zero in the plot department, disjointed and very (too) inspired by NGE (Evangelion). Unworthy in any case to be a production of Tomino, as Yukiru Sugisaki presents it to us. Even if he did start with a new work from the papa of Gundam, he didn't make very much of it... (A.V)
