[This is an H doujinshi of Cammy from Street Fighter (among others). This edition is long out of print, but there's a Spanish version which may still be available. I saw one of the stories in it, and it was actually kind of cute, believe it or not.
[FYI, Samouraï also released copies of some other doujinshi, sometimes without even translating them, and apparently with a somewhat lackadaisical attitude toward securing rights. These editions are very hard to find nowadays.]

Commentaire : Un manga qui a le mérite de s'interresser au football. Il a réussi a faire réver les jeunes footballeurs. Très répétitifs, avec des graphismes sommaires et des persos qui se ressemblent tous et n'on de différent que leur noms, Captain Tsubasa a réussi néanmoins a trouvé son public (garçon agé d'environ une dizaine d'année et fan de foot: ce qui n'est pas rare en France). Un manga qui ne plaira surement qu'aux fans qui ont découvert cette série durant leur plus jeune age. (Foska)

[We need hardly add that Sakura-chan wa sugoi! The Manga Player edition, though flipped (actually about half flipped and half rearranged), seems nice, including the bonus "Clow card" bookmarks. (The couple of color pages are lost (done in grayscale), though.) In any case, it sure beats Mixx's typographic disaster!
[Note: the "Fox Kids" logo you see on the covers is there because the French Fox Kids televised the series (dubbed) in France.
[Difficulty: fairly easy, though as an analogy to the original Osaka accent, they give Kerberos a Marseillan "accent." In the manga, this mostly amounts to having him use some odd-looking words occasionally. These you should be able to figure out from context.]

[Hojo's first big success, in Japan and (as the dubbed anime, back in the '80's) in France as well. Three beautiful sisters, who for somewhat preposterous reasons become somewhat preposterously skillful jewel and art thieves. Complicating matters, the boyfriend (Toshio) of the middle sister (Hitomi) is none other than the police officer in charge of catching the thieves. Of course, Toshio remains perpetually clueless of Hitomi's secret identity.
[Yeah, the artwork's kind of strained and awkward at times, and the hairstyles tend toward disco-era horror, but what the heck, the stories, though mostly light, are clever and lots of fun, and the characters are all appealing. This puts it leagues above some other, better-drawn mangas...]

[Oh, poo. And I bet you didn't like (Erich Segal's) Love Story either. Hmm, neither did I, now that I think of it.
[Anyway, this is a collection of a dozen short stories of first loves. Each story (or more properly vignette) consists of around 12 or 13 pages of manga, followed by a page or two of reflective essay. The Tonkam edition seems good, unflipped and preserving the color pages of the original. Now, I will have to admit this is not a landmark of Clamp's oeuvre, but it might work as a Valentine's Day present for the right person. (Hey, at least the stories are less cloying than your average Hallmark card.) And hopefully you won't have to say you're sorry....

[Manga versions of two well-known pieces of short fiction by Jiro Asada.
[Le Cheminot (The railroad man) takes place in the winter (both literal and figurative) of the life of the stationmaster of Horomai, on the farthest stop of the most remote line in the most remote province of Japan (Hokkaido). Faithful to his work to the end, he has perhaps thus betrayed the interests of his family. Plus there are ghosts and a mystery of sorts involved. But rather than feeling cold, isolated, or forboding, there is a warmth which shines through the story, up until the final reconciliation. Probably this will appeal most to railroad buffs, but the atmosphere should be of interest to all.
[Love Letter is both similar (a sentimental "ghost" story) and entirely different. Goro is a middle-aged low-level punk, who some years earlier, on instructions from his yakuza bosses, entered into a sham marriage with a Chinese prostitute, in order that she could get papers to enter into Japan. She later contracts a venereal disease and dies, but while on her deathbed, for some reason writes a letter of love and thanks to Goro, a man she has never actually met. This affects him strongly, as he thinks of what his life could have been.
[Nagayasu is an old-school realistic meticulous artist, along the lines of Jiro Taniguchi, his rough contemporary. The Génération Comics edition on the whole does an excellent job of displaying this, preserving the initial color pages of both stories and maintaining a high level of quality in the reproduction and touchup throughout. The minor downside is that, like the Casterman editions of Taniguchi's work, this is rendered in Western reading order through a combination of panel rearrangement and occasional flipping - which mostly works fine, but every once in a while presents us with an unsettling reversal of a scene.
[Difficulty: Le Cheminot is fairly easy, being more quiet contemplation with limited text. Love Leter is rather harder, with its complement of slang and yakuza talk. So let's call it moderate in difficulty.]

[The next volume in the Kessaku Shuu ("Masterpiece Theater") collection of Takahashi short stories. This is one of the very few Takahashi works (well, other than the rest of Urusei Yatsura) which has not yet appeared in English, to my knowledge. The stories feature the usual inventive Takahashi plots, and the usual somewhat limited range of Takahashi character types. For some reason, almost all the stories are centered around middle-aged men, which may explain why this one has not yet appeared in English. Still, no matter your age or gender, you should find this one just as much fun as her other story collections.
[Tonkam has gone the "deluxe" edition route on this one: medium-large format, initial pages in color. It is of course unflipped, with overall good reproduction quality.]

Synopsis : En 2022, l'histoire de la Terre s'est arrêtée. Gaïa le super ordinateur qui gérait le système climatique de la planète est devenu incontrôlable. Il a donc développé sa puissance au delà de toute limite jusqu'à l'accident fatal qui a condamné bon nombre de ses fonctions. Gaïa a aussitôt engendré des GM chargés de les réparer et de supprimer le peu d'humains restant sur la planète. C'est un petit groupe de ces survivants qui part en Alaska où se trouve Gaïa afin de mettre fin à sa paranoïa destructive.

Lo and behold, he just happens to find one in a trash heap, so he takes her home, turns her on, and finds out her memory seems to have been wiped - all she can say is "Chi," which is what he names her. But what is Chi, really? Where did she come from? Could she be the mysterious "Chobits"? And just what the heck is that "mysterious 'Chobits'" anyway?]
[Unusually for Clamp, Chobits is a seinen (young adult) manga, but for the most part it only hints at the naughty stuff.]

Commentaires : C'est un peu répétitif à la longue, mais Hôjo raconte très bien les histoires donc ça coule tout seul, d'autant plus que le dessin est de plus en plus beau au fil du temps. L'histoire des derniers volumes, un peu plus suivie, clôt la série avec brio. (Ashura)
It's a little repetitive here and there, but Hojo is quite good at telling stories which move right along, and as a plus his artwork gets better and better as time passes. The story in the last few volumes, a bit more cohesive, closes the series with brio. (Ashura)
[Boy, this series takes you back. The influence City Hunter had on all kinds of other works, from YUA to Kenshin, is notable. A little dated, at times, but still fun.
[If you're wondering, "Nicky Larson" was the name given to Ryo Saeba in the (somewhat hacked) French TV version of the anime. The French version of the manga, as usual, does not suffer from the same alterations as the anime did.
[It's not the world's best edition, especially at the start: the paper quality seemed a bit lacking, and there were a few production flubs (e.g., pages printed twice) in at least my copy of the first volume. And, as noted above, sometimes the French text was printed directly on top of the Japanese. (Oh well, at least this way you can check their translation directly.) But the quality does improve after the first couple of volumes, and it's unflipped and complete, so all in all is probably the best non-Japanese edition we're ever going to see.
[Difficulty: The slang content is fairly high, and the dialogue often quite dense - much wordier than mangas tend to be nowadays - so I'm going to say moderate. However, the humor's pretty broad and the action content pretty high, so the visuals should be enough to carry you through.]

[Ah, manga parents. Beautiful (well, most of the time), beloved and absolutely and completely irresponsible. Miyu Suzuki is a 30-something mother, but still manages to pass herself off as a 22-year-old in her modeling career. Part of doing so involves hiding the existence of her 14-year-old tomboy daughter Rin.
[I don't know, perhaps Miyu cultivates the irresponsibility as a means of maintaining her youthful allure, but in any case, she abruptly runs off, leaving her modeling agency in the lurch, and also not so incidentally leaving her daughter with no visible means of support. So Rin decides she will kill two birds with one stone and replace her mother on the pending modeling contracts. (Well, not as an exact replacement, but as Miyu's supposed 17-year-old "fresh looking" younger sister.) Can Rin, with the assistance of Miyu's handsome makeup artist, work the reverse transformation and pass herself off as someone older (and rather more, um, developed) than herself?
[A pretty straightforward read, so far as shoujo manga goes. Also filled with good information on breast augmentation - never can tell when something like that might come in handy!]

Yoshihiro Tatsumi is known in the history of Japanese comics as the inventor of the word "gekiga" ["drama-manga"] which designates a genre of mangas freed from their original tight thematic and economic constraints, and then organized along dramatic lines and so addressed more toward an adult public. [...]
On ne retrouve pas dans Coup d'éclat les deux histoires publiées par Artefact en 1983. L'album comprend donc cinq histoires inédites, présentées de façon impeccable dans le sens de lecture japonais et dans un format d'une plus grande fidélité à l'édition originale. Nous sommes donc très loin de l'édition des années 80. Les choses ont bien évoluées et c'est tant mieux. Le plus remarquable est que le souci éditorial va jusqu'à préciser les dates de publications des histoires. Fait très rare dans la traduction de mangas, qu'il faut souligner, et qui permet de mieux apprécier et de situer le travail de l'auteur dans sa carrière. Coup d'éclat regroupe des histoires publiées entre 1969 et 1972 et l'on peut supposer, par exemple, qu'elles correspondent à une époque de maturité artistique pour son auteur, plus de dix ans après avoir forgé le terme "gekiga".
You won't find in Coup d'éclat the two stories published by Artefact [a French publisher whose early attempts at manga publishing failed] in 1983. This volume contains five uncut stories, presented in impeccable fashion: unflipped, and in a format much more faithful to the original edition. We are thus very far from the 1980's edition. Things have come a long way, and it's all to the good. The most remarkable is the editorial care extends to specifying the original publication dates of the stories. Quite rare in manga translations, something we must underline, and something which allows us to better appreciate this work and place it properly within the author's career. Coup d'éclat includes stories published between 1969 and 1972 and so we can suppose, for example, that they correspond to a period of artistic maturity for the author, more than ten years after he created the term "gekiga."
Les cinq histoires présentées sont d'une très grande richesse, passionnantes par leurs thèmes et leur contemporanéité, et ce, trente cinq ans en moyenne après leur création.
The five stories presented here possess a great richness, impassioned both in their themes and their timeliness, and this more than thirty years after their creation.

[Fun, but I will say that Minku is already so hyper-cute that she doesn't really get any cuter in cyber-idol form. As far as the story goes, I think "mischievous" applies to the author at least as much as to Mink(u). The Soleil/Végétal edition seems pretty good.
