Yeah, the initial setup for the story defies all reason (as Miyu herself observes), but the whole bit about the unwilling "couple" being forced into unwilling "parenthood" has all sorts of amusing/alarming ramifications, which are thoroughly explored. The Soleil/Végétal is basically fine, except for their occasional predilection toward using somewhat ugly "script" fonts. In particular, their script editing seems much improved over earlier efforts.]
[Difficulty: moderately easy; though dialogue/internal monologue-driven in good shoujo fashion, it's not a hard read.]

He then takes the name Conan Edogawa and continues his inquiries while trying to regain his true form.
Commentaires : De très jolis dessins tout en rondeur, des enquêtes qui se tiennent, et qui ne répugnent pas à nous montrer de beaux meurtres avec du sang et tout. C'est une série qui oscille perpétuellement entre le sérieux et le comique, sans atteindre le niveau de délire d'un Ranma. Par exemple, Shinichi/Conan loge chez une de ses amis, qui ne sait pas qui il est (pour ne pas la mettre en danger), mais dont le père est détective (euh... nul le détective. Les défauts de Ryo Saeba, et pas les qualités). Son but est de résoudre les affaires du détective sans se faire reconnaître, histoire que tout le monde le prenne pour un Grand Detective et lui confie des enquêtes qui le remettront sur la piste des hommes en noir. À lire absolument, et vu le prix ridicule, vous n'avez pas d'excuse. En plus, Dargaud nous fait de très bonnes adaptations. (ME)
Very pretty drawings all in the round [there's got to be a better way to say this in English], mysteries that hold together, and which don't shy from showing us real murders with blood and everything. It's a series which oscillates perpetually between the serious and the comic, without reaching the delirious level of a Ranma. For example, Shinichi/Conan takes up residence at the home of one of his friends [his girlfriend Ran], who[m he] doesn't [let] know who he really is (so as not to put her in danger), but whose father is a detective (euh... not much of a detective. The weaknesses of Ryo Saeba, and none of the strengths). His goal is to resolve the [father] detective's cases without making himself known, the result being that everyone takes him [the father] for a Great Detective and entrusts him with cases that will then put him [Shinichi/Conan] on the trail of the "men in black." A must read, and in view of the ridiculous price, you don't have any excuse. Even more, Dargaud is making for us very good adaptations. (ME)
[I'll have to second the endorsement above; this is currently one of my favorite French-translated manga series. The Dargaud/Kana edition is excellent, with all the original material included (like Aoyama's brief reviews of other mystery writers), and more besides. (The extra material is sometimes rearranged somewhat, though.)
[Difficulty: More than most manga translations, this reads like a "normal" story, without a lot of slang or odd vocabulary. Consequently, I found it very straightforward to read. However, more than most manga stories, you'll be missing important parts of the plot if you don't have an adequate reading knowledge of French (say, 2 years).]

Commentaire : C'est un très bon manga. Il mêle anges et démons à merveille. L'opposition entre Ios et Sword est bien visible mais elle est un peu atténuée par le fait qu'ils soient dans les corps de frères jumeaux. Les personnalités de Kana et Sôma sont marquées par des traits de caractères spécifiques qui nous font penser que Sword serait mieux dans le corps de Kana et Ios dans celui Sôma. Il y a également beaucoup d'humour, ce qui rend ce manga très agréable à lire. (Mélanie)
Les âmes humaines et démoniaque/angélique sont amenées à cohabiter dans un même corps, faisant par exemple ressentir à Sword des sentiments qui lui apparaissent (en toute logique pour un démon) comme un énorme handicap, et qui finalement lui apportent des forces supplémentaires et une raison de se surpasser. Le petit groupe qui se forme, par le rajout à chaque manga de nouveaux personnages, le rend encore plus attachant. (Dakred)

Et le mot est faible ; les scènes de boucheries se succèdent avec une jouissance dans l'horrible assez désagréable. Âmes sensibles et optimistes s'abstenir. Ugly artwork (say what you will, Go Nagai simply does not know how to draw!), it is still the first horror manga published in French. And the word is a weak one; the scenes of butchery follow each other with a delight in the horrible which is rather disagreeable. Sensitive souls and optimists should avoid. Created by Koge D[o]nbo who here officiates as mistress of the work, the three extraterrestrials D[i]giko, P[u]chiko and Rabi en Rose [sic, Rabi en Rose (Hikaru Usada) is actually supposed to be human] are envisioned, in the course of the story, by authors with various artistic styles. The different layouts thus infuse the pages, in the course of each story, with a serious touch of the lash. Digiko finds herself once again in competition with Rabi en Rose (notably for the title of Miss Games) and will resort even to kidnapping to gain an advantage.

Teenage girl Azumi returns to live in the town she had left with her parents five years previously. There, she finds her old best friend Katsuhiko who had suffered greatly from their separation. He spends his days on the banks of the river and has to power to disperse himself into nature and be transported through space. So great is his power that, "transported" into the heart of Africa, the villagers take him for a god. A story of friendship, purity of feeling, and contemplation in a world where everything passes too quickly.

[An odd and interesting work, both in terms of the story and the artwork. A note on the latter - unusually for Japanese manga, this seems to have been done entirely without screentone - all of the (extensive) shading was done by hand with painstaking cross-hatching. It's almost like an art class, as Oda demonstrates what he can do with the simplest of tools. To be honest, his figure art isn't my favorite, but it is certainly accomplished, and did grow on me after a while.

Commentaires : Un manga pour fille qui peut être lu par tous, mais les mecs s'en prennent quand même pas mal (surtout pour leurs côtés pervers). L'histoire est vraiment bonne et le dessin pas mal. Dommage que le manga se termine de cette façon là (ça appellerait presque une suite). À lire, ça change des manga sérieux grace à son humour et son dessin sympa (certains rappellent ceux de Kimengumi / Un college fou fou fou lorsque les persos deviennent tout petits). (Christophe)
A manga for girl[s] [sic!] which can be read by all, but guys can get caught up in it all the same (especially on their perverted side). The story is really good and the artwork not bad. Too bad that the manga ends the way it does (it practically cries out for a sequel). Recommended, it changes "serious" manga thanks to its humor and its nice artwork (some of which recalls that in Kimengumi/Un college fou fou fou, with its characters gone all small). (Christophe)

[I don't know, maybe it's because I prefer my Katsura in concentrated dosages, but I kind of liked this one. Karin(e) Aoi is a proper lovably-kooky-but-committed Katsura heroine, and Junta Momonari is less angsty than the usual Katsura hero. It does get into the silly-(but-not-quite-silly-enough)-superhero mode on occasion, and the fights, while usually well-staged, drag on a bit too long, but oh well. Incidentally, despite the comment above, this one is about as shounen as they come - I mean, it was published in Shounen Jump!]

Enfin, un shôjo manga aussi bien destiné aux filles qu'aux garçons! Il faut dire que son auteur (qui signe là son tout premier manga) est un homme, et qu'à l'instar d'un Masakazu Katsura (Video Girl) il sait fort bien retranscrire les émois de l'adolescence et les premières palpitations du coeur. DNAngel est une comédie romantique très réussie, avec une touche de sensualité, beaucoup d'humour et un graphisme somptueux.
Finally, a shoujo manga designed as much for girls as for guys! [What the...??] It must be said that its author (who here presents his first manga) is a man, and following the example of Masakazu Katsura (Video Girl) he knows full well how to relate the emotions of adolescence and the first beatings of the heart. DNAngel is a quite successful romantic comedy, with a touch of sensuality, lots of humor, and sumptuous art.

[As the blurb indicates, this is melodramatic in the extreme. And as the cover scan might indicate, Koh tends, somewhat disturbingly, to look like he has a touch of makeup on. (Well, there is a reason for this, as it develops later.) Still, it's pretty decent medical drama. Note: this is more "medical drama" along the lines of General Hospital than, say, Black Jack. In other words, don't expect much medical detail; in fact, for reasons which will become obvious on reading it, not much of the operations is normally shown.
[One medical fact does lie at the heart of this series, though (and to some extent, for Angel Heart as well). Up until very recently, major organ transplantation was virtually unknown in Japan, since death was defined by cessation of heartbeat (which, obviously, would make heart transplantation pointless), rather than brain death as in the West. So transplantation was viewed as part of "the mysterious West" and could only be performed in Japan by outlaw surgeons like Koh.
[Difficulty: not too hard from the point of view of the medical terminology, but the stories tend to be told with a shifting, back-and-forth timeframe, which can make them a bit hard to follow at times.]

[The Glénat edition is ok, with no real omissions, except that it is flipped, with, especially in the earlier volumes, a somewhat slapdash attempt at touchup. (Often, words and the like are simply expunged, rather than redrawn in the correct direction.)
[Difficulty: The first couple volumes (the initial dragon ball quest) require some work, but later on, when you have pages of dialogue along the lines of "Il est à moi!" "Sale gosse!" "Ahhhh!" this has to be one of the easiest mangas to read in any language (well, except for the ones with no dialogue).]

[Just like the soft-drink marketers who found it profitable to sell Pepsi in every imaginable size combination, Glénat is going the saturation route with Dragon Ball as well. I didn't even know this existed until I stumbled across it at an airport bookstore.
[Following Pepsi's, or perhaps Nintendo's lead, it seems that there are four(!) different versions of this monthly, each with different covers. The older colors (yellow, red, white) had the older translation, while the "violet" one I have is the unflipped, "originale" version of Dragon Ball. In either case, they are half-size rather than double-size editions. (That is, half the page count.) I guess the idea is to make a super-cheap edition suitable for the impulse purchase market, or for those looking for a magazine equivalent - monthly, less than 3EUR.]

In the genre of "books you shouldn't read at night or else you won't be able to sleep at all," this one's a must. A perfect description of fear (Rody). [Or was that "... fear of L.A."? Heh, heh.]
[A school group riding on a train enters a tunnel when a sudden cataclysm kills most of the people on board and seals both ends of the tunnel. What has happened? Can the few survivors get out? And what would they be getting out to? A dramatic beginning to a "new classic" of post-apocalyptic fiction.
[Maybe it says something deep about me, but I've always been a fan of survivalist tales, from accounts of the ill-fated arctic expeditions of the 19th century to the post-World War III SF stories of the '50's and '60's. Dragon Head ranks pretty well in this curious crowd; Mochizuki handles the technical details of how the characters survive (or don't) quite competently, while skillfully maintaining the tension. I should warn you that cliffhanger endings are pretty much the norm - this is one series that would be excruciating to read on the usual U.S. publishing schedule.
[The manga format seems uniquely well-suited to the story; given the isolation and loneliness the characters feel, putting in too many words would be inappropriate. And the black and white presentation is the only correct one for this story set in darkness and shadow.
[As those with good eyesight can see from the cover scan, I have the Pika reedition of this. It seems quite well done, unflipped, with all the dark tones reproduced in a legible fashion.
[Difficulty: As mentioned, there isn't often a lot of text, and by and large it's fairly easy to read. Which is just as well, since once you get going, you'll be racing through to find out what happens next.]

[Out of Glénat's early (199X) adaptations, this is one of the better ones. It is unflipped, and basically true to the original. (The original katakana sound effects aren't kept, though.) I'd recommend it.
[Difficulty: I found this one a little harder to read at first, simply because so many unexpected things happen all the time that there's not a lot of context to help you understand what's going on. It's also packed with slang, some of it normal, some of it as strange as any in Tintin. However, after reading a few stories, you kind of get used to the style, and it becomes much easier.]
