Masahiko is happy. The weather is fine, the university has opened its arms to him, and the young orphan (which he is) has just found a new home, at the house of his uncle, of whom he had heard nothing for years. But this rosy little cloud doesn't take long to change to rain. Beneath its surface appearance as a model family, the Wakanaes reveal themselves to be a little... peculiar. His aunt Yuriko is really a man, a transvestite, and his uncle Sora, the inverse. This brings up a number of questions. And there are even more concerning Shion, their only daughter - or so it would seem - who does not leave Masahiko unaffected. Will he succeed in overcoming his culture shock and accept this strange new family?
[Hojo's trademark humor and seriously androgynous style ("where all the women are strong and the men good-looking") applied to perhaps the definitive story of transvestism. Fortunately, there's more going on than just cross-dressing; for example, Sora "him"self is a manga author, with a most peculiar collection of assistants. (Well, OK, they're cross-dressers too, but that's just the beginning, not the end, of the story.)
[The Tonkam edition is a good one, unflipped, slightly larger size, with the initial color pages preserved. The reproduction quality looks good throughout, a fitting treatment for an artist now at the height of his ability.
[Difficulty: Moderate to moderately difficult. The slang level is not too bad, perhaps a bit higher than average. But Hojo's work is fairly well text-driven, despite the broad humor, so a reasonable command of French is recommended.]

On les appelle des Flag Fighters. Ils organisent des combats la nuit: les Flag Fight. Au cours de ces rencontres, ils combattent au péril de leur vie, en mettant en jeu leur drapeau, symbole de leur identité. Le gagnant prend le drapeau du vaincu. Commentaire : Flame of Recca est vraiment un excellent manga. Tout y est: action, de l'humour, un scénario très bien ficelé, bref, un manga d'une très bonne qualité. Le héros a un caractère enfantin, il n'est pas vr[aie]ment conscient de ses actes et des risques qu'il court...Mais c'est un "ninja" et c'en est un pour de bon! Flame of Recca is truly an excellent manga. It's got everything: action, humor, an intricate plot, in short, a manga of very good quality. The hero has a childish personality, he is not really aware of his actions and the risks he runs... But he's a "ninja" and in fact really is one! All his companions serve to spice up this manga. Excellent manga dans son genre, toutefois on peut lui reprocher de s'apparenter un peu trop au célèbre manga Yuyu Hakusho, le style de scénario[] jusqu'au volume 16 étant à peu de choses près identique. Il n'en reste pas moins qu'il est le premier manga publié de Noboyuki Anzai, et qu'il se donne à fond pour satisfaire ses lecteurs. Les dessins évoluent tout au cours des tomes pour en arriver à un style plutôt bien réussis, enfin cela n'engage que moi...^^ (Breton)

Il s'agit cette fois d'un manga historique, qui se déroule en Yougoslavie, pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale... ça n'est pas vraiment très joyeux, et je crains que ça ne s'arrange pas avec la suite. Here again is a work of Sakaguchi which demonstrates (if there is still any need) the immense talent of this author. This time, he's produced a historical manga, which unfolds in Yugoslavia during World War II... It's not especially happy, and I fear things will not work out in the end. (ME)

The basic plot is hardly original. A succession of prolonged combats and training in fighting techniques, for battling with a series of increasingly strong adversaries. On the other hand, the characters offer more of interest. A bad translation at the start, but this doesn't interfere with the understanding. (Pazu)

Commentaire : Je trouve ce manga trés ambigu et trés interessant quand au développement de l'histoire et des protagonistes principaux. L'histoire de ce manga traite quand même d'un sujet délicat voir même tabou de la société: l'inceste entre frère et soeur! La façon dont sont analysés les personnages est trés touchante car malgré nous on les suit pas à pas dans leur réfléxion et on en vien à les cerner et les comprendre assez rapidement. Ce manga est trés doux. Il n'y a pour moi qu'une seule chose à redire: la façon dont les mains et les pieds sont dessinés! ils sont absolument disproportionnés! (Marelli)
I find this manga rather enigmatic and interesting so far as the development of the story and the principal protagonists are concerned. The plot of this manga treats however what is a delicate or even taboo subject in our society: incest between brother and sister! The way the characters are analyzed is very touching because despite ourselves we follow them step by step in their thought processes and come to see and understand them rather quickly. This manga is quite sweet. For me, there's only one thing I'd like redone: the way the hands and feet are drawn! They are completely disproportionate! (Marelli)

Published by Kodansha in 2003, Forget-me-not is nothing less than a fantasy concentrate: a dream heroine, a dream setting, all dusted with mystery. Glamorous and light, this improbable cat-and-mouse game is quite simply irresistible.
[If you're a Tsuruta fan, you've already ordered this. And if you're not, well, à chacun son [manque de] goût, I suppose. In either case, a review is almost pointless.
[I will say, though, that the blurbs make this sound like pure cheesecake, which is more than a little unfair. Yes, Mariel is as pretty as any Tsuruta heroine, but she's also as feisty and determined and multifaceted as any of them as well - in particular, a master, er, mistress of disguise, and fairly adept at unraveling the peculiar mysteries presented to her. In fact, the main fault I can find with her is poor posture. C'mon, Mariel, stop slouching and sit up straight! (... he says, as he types while slouching on the sofa. Hmm, my laptop looks almost identical to hers as well.)
[Although the cover picture is not one of Tsuruta's better efforts, it does indicate the rather melancholy, brooding aspect of this manga. More so even than his other works, this one ends on a sad, wistful note. (No, don't worry, nothing terrible happens to Mariel.)
[The Casterman/Sakka edition is quite good, unflipped (of course), medium-sized format with excellent reproduction quality throughout. I did notice a couple of minor "flous" but have no real complaint with the translation.
[Difficulty: moderate. While the storyline is somewhat more connected than in Spirit of Wonder, there's still a drifting quality to the narrative, compounded by the various misdirections Mariel investigates and instigates.]

Synopsis : Tohru Honda, jeune lycéenne de 17 ans, se trouve mêlée dans une histoire pas comme les autres. En effet, elle est devenue orpheline à cause du décès de sa mère. Après beaucoups d'évenements, elle se fait inviter par Shiguré (le propriétaire de la maison) qui lui permet de vivre dans celle-ci en échange de toutes les tâches ménagères. Tohru découvrira vite le secret des Sohma. Ceux-ci sont atteints par la malédiction des douzes signes du zodiaques chinois. Ils se transforment en animaux lorsqu'ils sont en contact avec une personne du sexe opposé. Tohru donnera toute sa tendresse et sa générosité à cette famille au destin tragique. (kinga)
Tohru Honda, a 17-year-old high school girl [excuse me, "high school woman"], finds herself mixed up in an unusual story. Briefly, she has become an orphan after the death of her mother. She comes to live at her grandfather's house, but because of the work he's doing at the house, Tohru decides not to encumber him and goes to live in a tent. As it happens, she finds herself encamped on the property of the Sohmas, and recognizes one of her classmates, Yuki, who lives in the house near her tent. After lots of mishaps, she is invited by Shigure (the head of the household) to live there in exchange for handling the housework. Tohru will quickly discover the secret of the Sohmas. They are afflicted with the curse of the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac. They transform into animals [of the zodiac] whenever they come into contact with a person of the opposite sex. Tohru will devote all her tenderness and generosity to this family with its tragic destiny. (kinga)
Commentaire : Fruit[s] Basket est un manga trés touchant, remplit d'amour et d'espoir. Il vise plutôt un public feminin mais je le recommande à tout le monde car à travers Tohru, il nous donne une belle leçon sur la vie. Bonne lecture a tous :) (leonnie)

[Here's one of the few series where I've been able to compare French, English and Japanese original versions. On the whole, the Tonkam edition is quite good: unflipped, with the various extras included, and a translation that to me sounds less forced than the Viz version. I even kind of liked Tonkam's "watercolor paper" covers. However, the katakana sound effects are largely removed, and the author's notes somewhat edited to fit in the space. (Watase-san can be a bit chatty, can't she?) But, as usual, the telling point has to be that the series was completely finished in French at the point when the second English graphic novel just made it out the door.
[Difficulty: moderately easy. Besides, you already mostly know what happens.]
