Youth Journalism
International's blog welcomed the new year with students across the globe
writing stories and sending pictures about their customs and celebrations as
last year rolled into 2011. You can see all of it on the blog at
www.YJIBlog.org or follow the links below for a taste of the package.
The YJI symbols on the map indicate where the YJI students who participated live.

-- “Hogmanay” – yes, I know what you’re thinking. It’s a weird
word. But believe it or not, it is the Scots’ word for “Last Day
of The Year” and is a night of many superstitions, traditions,
and fun.

- This year we celebrated New Year's with a fondue. We also traditionally
have champagne and what we call "oliebollen," or oilballs, that consist of
lumps of deep-fried dough.

– Most people are out on New Year’s Eve. Crazy parties top the lists of
adults and even teens. However, some teens aren’t as fortunate. Some of us
are forced to babysit, andI
was one of the chosen.

–
Saturday’s shooting of a congresswoman in Arizona is a day that will go down in
history, but to me it’s even more personal than that.
My house is eight miles from where the shooting happened – at a
shopping center where I go to frequently, a place that I drive
by every single day.
When I think about the people that were killed or injured, I

in YEREVAN,
Armenia –While Christmas falls on December 25 for many of the
world’s Christians, in my country, we celebrate it on January 6.
We have many
traditions that would feel familiar to Christians in other lands. We attend
church, light candles, make special foods, and put out our shoes so the Wise Men
can leave us presents.
Our
celebration, however, marks the original date for celebrating the birthday of
Jesus. Read
