Pawnee Buttes Hike

14 May 2006

We had 14 participants in our Pawnee Buttes hike. Meeting time was 9:00 AM; it was surprising how cool it was on the high plains - about 50 degrees and windy. As time passed it warmed up, the wind went down a bit, and more people showed on the trail. It was good that we got an early start!

Chuchang took point out of the parking lot. Within 100 yards she spotted a horny toad and we all stopped to look  PawneeWalk.JPG (374464 bytes) This turned out to be a theme - we saw at least half a dozen of the lizards HornyToad.JPG (514533 bytes) HornyToad2.JPG (471139 bytes) even though a guide book stated that it is unusual to see two in a day!

The wildflowers were starting to bloom PurpleFlowers.jpg (59584 bytes) and we also saw some small local wildlife - a stinkbug!. stinkbug.jpg (53917 bytes)

Once we got to the base of the second butte, we stopped for lunch dscf0704.jpg (486449 bytes) ButtesBreak.JPG (471013 bytes) PawneeSnackTime2.jpg (31343 bytes) RestingAtBase.jpg (33482 bytes)

On the way back PawneeTrail4.jpg (20046 bytes) we encountered yet more of the desert horned lizards ClaraLizard.JPG (392260 bytes)

We had a great time on the hike. Thanks Devon for setting this up!
