The PCG Sierra Club visted Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks between 15 and 20 May, 2007
The Bureau of Land Management lands in southern Utah can be
pretty bare. Ted and Chuchang went down early; here is a picture
of their campsite the first night. This is north of Hanksville, right by
the San Rafael Swell. Here is the view
west from the campsite:
The Grand Staircase-Escalante
National Monument is located just East of Bryce Canyon
National Park. Many of us were able to visit this national
monument either before or after the organized outing. The Calf
Creek campsite is at the trailhead to a rare desert waterfall.

The overlooks of Bryce Canyon are as amazing as expected
but the trails
going down are pretty steep! It is worth it to make the hike; being
among the hoodoos is amazing.
Zion National Park is a crown jewel in our National Park
system.
Many of us were
able to climb to the top of Angel's Landing
and to
Observation Point. The trail up to Observation Point passes by an
amazing slot canyon. At points the trail is dramatic - even scary.
The view from the
top is huge.

The Narrows of the Virgin River is considered one of the
signature hikes of the American southwest

Spring is a great time to visit the desert. We saw lots of
flowers.
