The Kids' SOF Project
Versions 2.0
& 2.1

The trials of Version 1.0 went very well. Several different kids paddled the boat and fit relatively well. The boat tracks really well. There were, however, a few modifications we decided to put into future versions:

  • Raise the "masik" (form 2) by about 1"
  • Round form 2 for comfort and ease of entry
  • Back the top of form 2 with a shaped 2x4 to provide a thicker surface for gripping with the tops of the thighs
  • Add another bungee on the backband to keep it in place better
  • Narrow the beam by 2" (note: This is an experiment on versions 2.0 and 2.1)

Version 2.0 incorporates all of the modifications listed above and uses the standard section placement for the Sea Flea 11.

Version 2.0 (left) and 2.1 (right). 2.0 is only 1 foot shorter. though the angle makes it look much shorter.
Section 2 (the "masik") has been backed with a shaped 2X4 to provide a larger surface for the thighs.
The section shape was modified to more-closely match a traditional masik. As you can see, the gunwales on version 2.0 were mounted at the top of the section. With the additional 1" of height, this introduced a fair amount of rocker into the design. The gunwales on version 2.1 were mounted 1" lower, which gave it the same hull profile as version 1.0.
