Bio for Alana McFall

For the past five months, Alana McFall has been enrolled in the Maryland Institute College of Art's Post-baccalaureate Program where she attends classes in art history and technique while pursuing her own artistic direction.

Before enrolling at MICA, Alana worked for six years as a Baltimore City teacher at Morrell Park Elementary Middle School. Five years were spent as a middle school special educator in self-contained classes. There, she worked with students with a broad range of cognitive and emotional disabilities such as oppositional-defiant disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. During her final year at Morrell Park, Alana taught art to students from pre-school through eighth grade. Her skills as a special educator carried over into her art teaching, and art theory and history were always included in the lesson plans.

While at Morrell Park, Alana also served as Chair of the School Improvement Team, Coordinator of the Middle School Service Learning Program, Case Manager for the Instructional Consultation Team, coach for the National Academic Team, and member of the Chesapeake Bay Schools Leadership Team.

Prior to teaching in the Baltimore City School System, Alana worked as a tutor and teacher for several organizations including the Odyssey School and Brown Memorial in Baltimore, and the Parent Infant Center in Philadelphia. She also spent two summers in Europe working for Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Goelet tutoring their three daughters, one of whom is dyslexic. Alana has an amazing talent for teaching dyslexic children.

In 2001, Alana received her Maters Degree from the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Maryland where she studied Leadership in Teaching with a special education concentration. Alana's has a BA in Psychology from Goucher College in Baltimore. As a student at Goucher, she was on the Dean's List, a member of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, and a member of the Varsity Swim Team.

Recently, Alana has served on the Board of Directors of a fledgling non-profit organization committed to enhancing Baltimore's community through the formation of a charter school highlighting experiential education.
