Artist Statement

Inspired by Symbolists such as Edvard Munch, my artwork primarily serves to evoke an emotional response. Senses of aloneness, sorrow and struggle are balanced with an atmosphere of womb-like protection. Themes of the birth of the inner child, and the silencing of women in American culture are common in my pieces. My work reflects the silencing of expressions of needs, wants, and pains.

Depth of perception and emotion are expressed through the texture and background, with the line providing its own depth as well as definition. The quality of the line itself is expressive. The figures in my work are often found faceless with simply defined figures; however, I feel that adds to the power of the work because anyone can identify with the emotion of the piece. Thick oozing layers of paint and dark shading reflect the sense of helplessness I am trying to convey. The use of blood red color represents essential life force as well as pure destruction.

I am not seeking to create disturbing work, but I often address disturbing subject matter. I have no vested interest in shock value. I am just representing universal emotions in art form hoping to evoke feelings in the viewer. Regardless of what the response might be, I want the viewer to have a moment of connection with my art. It comes from within.
