The FJBruisers on the Ass_a_Teague Run
Planning is critical to any successful trip. Usually, the planning takes place behind the scenes, but here are some photos of the of the trip organizers discussing the next day's activities. Pay no attention to the objects on the tables!
After such a grueling secession, which lasted into the early morning, several of us slept in late. Others got an early start and went fishing at the crack of dawn. The RedTrooper, of course, had to stay in the late group to lead the drivers inexperienced with sand. We had planned on breakfast at the TC Diner, but everything was packed. We ended up having a picnic breakfast outside of the Assateague nature center. While we were there, Rick AFChief drove up, so it worked out well. After getting our OSV permits at the Ranger station and airing down, we hit the sand. Here are some photos of our arrival at the site. Notice how setting up the port-o-potty enclosure was one of the first orders of business.
Josh and Herb had to leave early, so I lead them to the VA line and took a couple of side runs to the back side of the Island. Here they are with Julianne.
Here they are at the VA line.
On the return trip, we saw an F150 burying itself in the sand. The tires were spinning so fast that clouds of black smoke engulfed the rig. The old Troop did herself proud and pulled out the F150. Unfortunately, neither Julianne nor Josh took a photo of the recovery. Upon our return to the site, the Trooper resumed its duties as a windscreen for the port-o-potty.
Then the rest of the Bruisers went on a speed run. Needless to say, there were some loose nuts in that group. Whether the nuts came loose before or during the run, I won't say. Upon their return, one of the drivers decided to show us how to bury a rig up to its frame just by spinning tires. At least he could smile about it.
Since the recovery gear in the RedTrooper was easily accessible, the RedTrooper lined up to pull out the TRD. This was more to its liking than potty protection duty.
Here is the video record of the recovery. Needless to say, Vaughn really learned his lesson. So he got right back in his rig and did it again! However, he went a lot faster the second time and didn't have any trouble. With all of the excitement, everyone got a bit hungry. Mario grilled some sausages, burgers and hotdogs. Vaughn made grilled cheese sandwiches over an open wood fire. Notice that there was no fish on the menu. The fishermen were skunked!
Here are some photos of our assistants.
With all of the wind, it got chilly after the sun went down. So we broke camp and had a nice night drive back. About 100 feet from pavement, we ran into Josh and Anna. They were coming for the bonfire but had been delayed. So we invited them back to the DiStasio bungalow for after wheeling drinks. Fatigue caught up to most of us, however, and we each barely managed to consume even a single beer. Now that is a well planned trip! |
