Welcome to my Web site!

I've been working in the computer industry for over 20 years with a strong emphasis on the successful development of commercial software applications.   I've been directly involved with and a strong force behind many well-known commercially successful efforts.  With a passion for R&D and a desire to satisfy customers, I bring a lot of managerial, business, and technical knowledge, to the table.

My Goal:  To provide the best in executive managerial and technical leadership, empowering managers and teams to deliver great products that are on time, delight customers, and bankrupt competitors!

Bottom line:  I love what I do and deliver on what I love.

Sabrix

VP of Product Engineering.  Sabrix provides the industry's best sales and use tax solution to 5 of the Fortune 10 as well as hundreds of SMB clients every day.  Our SaaS solution calculates sales and use tax withholdings for every line item of every invoice generated -- in real time!  We even generate signature ready returns.  Tied directly into to the leading ERP solutions such as SAP, Oracle Financials, MS Navision, and dozens of others through web services our Java-based solution ensures that our customers are compliant with the latest tax laws for hundreds of jurisdictions throughout the US and the world.

Compli

CTO and VP of Product Operations.  Provided both external and internal technology leadership for Compli, focusing on corporate strategy and technologies that align the company's investments with the business requirements of Compli's customers. I managed Product Management, Research and Development, Hosting Services, as well as technology partners while providing premium solutions for our customers. I am a current Advisor to the Board of Directors and the executive team.

ProSight (acquired by Primavera Systems then Oracle)

Provided executive leadership for ProSight as the CTO and VP of Product Strategy, focusing on corporate strategy and technologies that aligned the company's products, solutions, and services with the business requirements of our customers. As one of the US founders I helped to grow ProSight in to an industry recognized high growth company with revenues in excess of $25M. ProSight was recognized by industry analysts such as the Meta Group and Gartner to be the leaders of the application and portfolio management spaces. Our customers included many industry CIOs including Hershey, Panasonic, Avery Dennison, US DHS, US Treasury, Army, FDA, HHS, VA, etc. I managed Product Management and Marketing, established key strategic partnerships, and M&A. A key designer of the ProSight system I am a named inventor on 7 patents in the area of IT portfolio management. I managed a product portfolio with over a dozen products, coordinating all product management activities while overseeing the the work of our Israel-based R&D team. Acquired by Primavera.

Intersolv (then known as Merant and now as Serena)

I joined INTERSOLV in 1996 and rebuilt their PVCS R&D organization from scratch.   This new team delivered more products in its first year than the previous two years combined. As the Director of INTERSOLV PVCS Research and Development for the PVCS Business Unit I was responsible for R&D for the PVCS products including PVCS Version Manager, PVCS Version Manager Server, PVCS Tracker, and other products that assist PC and UNIX developers develop and deliver their products with higher quality faster. Under my direction, the PVCS group leveraged common services, processes, technologies and tools to enable them to more quickly and predictably deliver quality products to the market worldwide. Under my leadership the PVCS products aggressively met the changes in customer needs. Tracker I-Net was the first issue management system to leverage the new Internet technologies and Version Manager Server was one of the very first commercially available servers developed in Java.  I managed over 70 people in development, quality assurance, and documentation, managing within budgets exceeding $10 million.  As a big supporter of the Software Association of Oregon's 1000 by 2000 initiative (to place 1000 college interns in the state), my R&D group was one of the first to participate and we kept numerous interns actively employed in our year-round program.

Symantec, Peter Norton Product Group

I was one of the 3 lead developers for Norton Desktop for Windows back in the early days of the adoption of Microsoft Windows.  To put it simply:  The NDW team was on a mission.  Norton Desktop for Windows received numerous awards (literally in the hundreds) including PC/Computing's Most Valuable Product Award in 1991.

From NDW I moved on to take over the GUI development for Norton AntiVirus and to lead the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare push.  Before joining that team there were over 21 strong competitors in the market and Norton AntiVirus was not even in the top tier.   My goal was to create product so advanced and compelling that the playing field would be leveled to the top 3 and some stragglers.  I'd like to think that the award winning Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and Norton AntiVirus for NetWare 1.0 did just that, driving Symantec's AV business from just $7M a year to over $100M by the time I left the company.   Today Symantec is often referred to as "the anti-virus company" by folks in the industry and the press.

After helping to manage the development teams as a result of the acquisition of Fifth Generation, I then continued as the architect and then the Director of Development for the Security Business Unit for Symantec's Peter Norton Group.  At the time the Norton group delivered 3 products simultaneous with the launch of Microsoft Windows 95; Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 and its new VxD technology being one of the three.  My last project with Symantec was Norton's Your Eyes Only, which brought real-time public/private key encryption to the Windows desktop in a manner that was very easy for just about anybody to use.

General Dynamics

Before joining Symantec, I was GUI architect and team lead for the development of General Dynamic's n-tier real time factory shop floor control systems.  I introduced Microsoft Windows 2.0 as the client platform and drove the interfacing to other technologies such as OS/2, Gupta's SQL routers and databases, DB2, 3COM's named pipes, etc.

And others...

As an independent contractor I was also involved in the creation of computer assisted instruction software, AT&T's Pharmacy Solution, as well as teaching computer programming classes at UCLA and the Kern High School District.  I received a B.S. in computer science from the University of California, Riverside, California.  I graduated valedictorian from Arvin High School.

I am a member of the board of directors for the Software Association of Oregon, the chairman of the SAO Developer's Forum, and an advisory board member to the Business Education Compact, Compli, and Fedarra.
