Region 7 Winter Clinic 2008

Highland Park Soo Bahk Do hosted this years Winter Clinic.  Over-all I think it was a success.  I want to thank everyone who assisted with the preparation.  I was very impressed with the way the students worked together to make the event happen!  Everyone had a role and it was a job well done!

For those who were unable to attend, we missed you.  For those of you who could have attended, but chose not to, please tell me why.  I need to know what we can do better to increase attendance to regional events.  For those who are more senior in rank, please make a more diligent effort to attend in the future.  I do expect senior members to be active regionally.

Maybe students don’t know what a clinic is?  It’s a day where all Region 7  members are invited to train together under Sa Bom Nim Seiberlich, the Regional Examiners, and with other members in the region.  The training is geared to help students in various areas we feel would benefit them and perhaps training that is not done at regular class.  We try to do some special things that make the experience unique.  We try to give students unique training opportunities.  If nothing else, just training as a group for a day should be enough.  Please see me if you have any questions.

I spoke with Sa Bom Nim Seiberlich and he told me he had a very good time and was very impressed with the quality of the students.  He was very pleased with the coordination of the event by our school.

We had a memorable experience and I hope all that attended learned something about themselves and the art.

The Importance of Giving /

Reflections from 5th Gup members Andrea Casselton, Beth Warren and David Jenkins

“It is when you give of yourself that you truly give” (The Prophet). Up to this point I have been mostly a receiver when it comes to Soo Bahk Do.  On a practical level I am joining with my other 5th Gup partners to give simple service to the school: organizational things, set-up and take down of flags and equipment. I do also think consciously of giving encouragement to the other students in the class. I know that it is a challenge at times to stay interested and focused. Sometimes being present to others, saying a kind word, does more for others than concrete deeds.

True giving is when you give of your self. Giving of possessions is a lesser giving, because our possession of things is temporary, they will all be passed on when we die. When you give to others, they not only give back to you, but also continue to give to others.  Giving is both a cycle and also a chain. This is important in Soo Bahk Do so that the art, philosophies and techniques – the fundamentals and core of the art – are passed on for many generations to come.  Giving will inspire others to give, and you will likely in turn receive help when you need it.  It will come back to you more abundantly ways than you gave.

There is deep personal reward in freely giving of self and possessions. Giving with expectations and giving with conditions is arrogant, who are we to presume to judge others when life is blind. Giving without asking is more satisfying then giving when asked. The receiver is to take the gift without debt, debt cheapens the gift. When giving becomes simply a way of being, God shines through the giver. It will fill you with joy to make someone else happy or to teach them something beneficial that they did not know or practice before.  We can learn from each others’ experiences, thoughts and opinions and knowledge.

Kids Corner

A Good Character by Harris Kelly, 2nd Gup

Respect, fairness and kindness are the three most important elements of good character. You need all three to have good character. Respect because it represents good faith, kindness for treating others well and fairness treating everybody the same. builds friendship. All three qualities are necessary. They are required of a person of good character.

A person with good character in my mind is my Sa Bom Nim (that’s Master instructor in Korean) Jack Kelly. He’s a Lieutenant in the Minneapolis Police department. He is also my martial arts instructor. Sa Bom Nim Kelly has taught me a lot abound being what you can be. Soo Bahk Do, the art he teaches is very hard mentally and physically. For instance there are classes in physical training but we are required to know things like the code of conduct that are all about good character.

Sa Bom Nim Kelly always demonstrates good character. When we are getting ready for a test, he seems to be hard on you but it`s not being mean, but rather it is a preparation for anything you may face. You have to think fast and move beyond required or basic moves and Mr. Kelly pushes you to do that.  By building on the basic moves repetitively you become instinctive and can handle surprise attacks. He demonstrates fairness by listening to people complain and he always tries to help them. By being a police officer he puts other’s before himself everyday, he is kind in his service. He is respectful by always listening and acknowledging people. If you learn about the art he practices you would see a man who is practicing what he preaches.
